Dragonball bounces

03.05.2008
If you were itching to see the irritating teen from WAR OF THE WORLDS and Spike from BUFFY and ANGEL whack each other with explosive force while wearing colorful wardrobe and pointy hair, you're going to be waiting a while longer.

Fox has shifted the release of their live-action DRAGONBALL flick to next year. Originally scheduled for August 15th, it would've had to face Ben Stiller's TROPIC THUNDER and the computer-animated STAR WARS: CLONE WARS theatrical release, so the studio has perhaps wisely decided to open April of 2009 with some ridiculous punching for the fate of the universe, or whatever the interminable manga and anime were purportedly about.

The movie stars Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Ernie Hudson, Emmy Rossum and, mystifyingly, Chow Yun-Fat. James Wong, who previously envisioned cartoonish brawls in THE ONE, directs the action with (presumably) normal-sized heads.
Extra Tidbit: Hong Kong superstar Stephen Chow (KUNG FU HUSTLE) is producing, which is at least one interesting thing about the project.

I'd like to see it

I've been interested in seeing a live-action take on this series for a while now. Stephen Chow being involved is a very good sign to me as well.

Kind of disappointed that they grabbed the director from "The One" for this project though. That was a very mediocre movie with some less than interesting fight sequences (but a few good ideas).

After seeing the final Smith vs Neo fight in Matrix Revolutions I knew exactly who I would like to see direct such a movie...

I'm a fan of the show, yeah it's kind of lame, but as Zeon636 pointed out, it's fun. Its the guilty pleasure in my DVD collection and a small part of me wants this film to be good.
I know it wont, it'll most likely suck balls (awful pun intended), but I'll still see it.
Maybe this delay will help improve it ever so slightly.

Damn...

I also was looking forward to this flick...yea it's not gonna be the best but it's DBZ(well DB at least) and I have wanted to see it in live-action since I first saw the cartoon way back when...just give me good flying scenes, screaming while powering up, things being destroyed, and power beams!

I, unlike a lot of people, kinda look forward to this. I was obssessed with DBZ when I was younger, and I always dreamed of a live-action version, not caring however hard to make it would be. But I am actually happy it is not a Asian cast. I don't know why, I don't enjoy watching Asian movies, and even though its all japanese in the mangas, I just think it makes it more promising to be an American production (more budget, wider release, etc.)

THIS SUCKS.

I've been waiting on this movie for about 7 or 8 years (back when it was first mentioned). I'm really sick of it being put off and I just want to see it, I don't care whether it turns out to be a Transformers or not, I've been waiting forever and nothing can spoil Dragon Ball for me.

Please!!

Keep pushing it back! Or better yet, don't release it at all! It will be awful. I love the series (but for what it is). This movie is a mistake, like Transformers, GI Joe, Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls, Speed Racer. I wish hollywood would stop ruining things I love.

Just when I was getting excited...

I have nothing but low expectations for this movie. I think it's silly for a live action adaptation of Dragonball to be handled as an American production.

HOWEVER, why are you hating on the anime and manga? YES, it has a simple story, but it's also fun. I mean effing comic book movies get a lot of cred, so why can't a movie based on a manga garner the same respect.

What IS it with JoBlo's staff writing a damn editorial on every scrap of news they find.
