Dreamworks Animation hires the supervillain janitors of the comic Maintenance

12.20.2010

Dreamworks Animation seems to have a thing for supervillains, whether they're from outer space (MONSTERS vs. ALIENS) or MetroCity (MEGAMIND). Now they seem to be working their way down past henchmen, all the way to the cleanup crew.

DWA has grabbed the rights to the Oni Press comic series MAINTENANCE, which follows a pair of janitors at a company that provides equipment for supervillains.

The property was previously set up at Warner Bros. as a MEN IN BLACK-style live-action FX-filled sci-fi/comedy, with director McG developing it. But there's no talent currently attached to the Dreamworks incarnation.

Here's Oni's own description of the book:

You think your job is bad? Doug and Manny have you beat! These guys are janitors! But they’re not your typical custodial crew--no, sir! They’re the guys who keep things shiny and clean at TerroMax, Inc., the world’s biggest and best evil science think tank! When they’re not dealing with toxic spill monsters and talking mansharks, they still have to worry about mad scientists, crazy would-be dictators, and the cute girl who works at reception!

Extra Tidbit: Lotsa raised eyebrows ahead: DWA is already working on sequels to KUNG FU PANDA, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and MADAGASCAR.

DWA to the rescue!

You say SIX Kung Fu Panda sequels. I doubt that will actually happen. Like someone said, they killed Shrek after four even though more were planned originally. They're trying to do the right thing. Where do you find the balance between ending on a good note and giving people what they want? You know when you know...and Dreamworks knows they need to offer more interesting and engaging movies. Boy oh boy, I cannot wait for their upcoming slate.

Sounds like a solid concept but hopefully it's more like How To Train Your Dragon with a lot of heart and pride behind it rather than Monsters Vs Aliens or Shrek 3.

See Miguelito, not everyone is against Dreamworks. If they have an interesting idea, executed properly, people give them their due. When they announce six new Kung Fu Pandas and a couple Madagascars on the side, they deserve the hate.

I was interested when I thought it was about a couple of Janitors who are super heroes, but this is a cool idea too.

Hahaha, reading that all in one breath really sounds hilarious if you think about it. :)

I'm a 5th generation sanitation expert/maintenance engineer, and that quote saddens and offends me deeply. Excuse me while I go wipe this tear off my shit and grease encrusted face.

BTW, this sounds awesome.

These 2 characters, jdging just from the picture on the page, reminds me of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. That would be dope.

How the F*CK would that be a bad job?? That would be super awesome, and I'd be banging that girl who works at the reception desk and b*tch-slapping some toxic spilling monsters

I dunno, you know those bad guys who, in a fit of rage decide to randomly execute one of their own just to show how bad they are? If these guys work for anyone like that, then yeah. God, I hope they do that.

Extra Tidbit: You're surprised?

DreamWorks Animation has been about the sequels ever since Shrek hit big. They were originally going to have 5 Shrek movies but pulled the plug when the box office started shrinking.

As for Maintenance, I hope they put Chris Sanders on it.
