DreamWorks readies How to Train Your Dragon 2

10.11.2010

DreamWorks is quickly mobilizing a sequel to its surprise success HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON with Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig all set to reprise their voice roles from the original. The studio is working to have the film in theaters for 2013 with co-director of the original Dean DeBlois taking the reins of the sequel.

Sometimes it's weird how it works with sequels. DreamWorks was hot to turn MONSTERS VS. ALIENS into a mega-franchise but the box-office on that film was a disappointment and the studio quickly shuttered any plans for a sequel. Meanwhile, DRAGON was expected to be the the third tier DWA release for 2010 (behind SHREK FOREVER AFTER and MEGAMIND) but hit big with critics and kids and could wind up being their biggest hit of the year, spawning an unexpected sequel.

The good news for the DRAGON creative team is that the original was setup as a prequel to the books by Cressida Cowell, which leaves nine books to draw inspiration from for future sequels. DRAGON 2 joins the Seth Rogen-voiced ghost comedy BOO U. and TRUCKERS in 2013 and will hit DVD and Blu-ray this Friday.

Extra Tidbit: It looks like DRAGON 2 will go up against Pixar's MONSTERS INC. 2 in 2013.

Ha ha...not quite that exciting. Hope they go with the cool-sounding title of the second book - How To Be A Pirate - instead of the generic HTTYD 2. We'll see. There's really so much to expand upon what the first movie introduced, so this should be good! I've always been a Dreamworks fan, but even I am intrigued by their upcoming slate of movies. Pleasantly surprised to see that they're coming into their own.

...and Miguelito cums in his pants.

I have to admit that if Dreamworks pumps out enough films that they were bound to get a good one out there. To bad Megamind won't be based on the new trailer I saw. But that's for a different day.

The first film was wonderful as a stand-alone piece but if course, the cash machine that is Dreamworks will stop at nothing to make more and more sequels to every single thing they touch. I mean, what kind of studio punches out THREE whole animated feature films a year? Even Disney didn't do that back in the day. Dreamworks is a machine - but where is the heart of Disney or Pixar?

Missed this in theaters and can't wait to get it on dvd this week. Heard nothing but great things. I love kids movies that actually care how good they are.

Nice, they made a really cool viking world, even without the dragons. Sure hope Mel Gibson gets to do that live action viking film he was planing to do.
