Drew Pearce confirms finished Ghostbusters script with Tatum & Pratt in mind

07.29.2015

There were a lot of rumors flying around about a third GHOSTBUSTERS film before Paul Feig announced his all-female take. Following the initial negative feedback, it almost seemed like another male Ghostbusters team was announced in response. Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt were some of the early names tossed around, and they sure as hell didn't seem to know what was going on, but we finally have some word from someone who does. Enter screenwriter Drew Pearce (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION, IRON MAN 3), who has just finished his draft on "the other" GHOSTBUSTERS film.

Drew Pearce on his GHOSTBUSTERS draft featuring an alternate team:

I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks. Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers — who did CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and are doing CIVIL WAR at the moment — and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it. Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!

Whether or not Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt will take part:

That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project. Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.

If his story ties into the original or Feig's take:

My personal inclination is to try and make everything occur in the same ’Ghostbusters’ universe, because I feel, as a fan, that’s what I would want. Standing here in New York, you just wanna tie it all together. Whether that happens or not we’ll see, but I’ve certainly given them the tools to do that, I hope.

While I didn't love IRON MAN 3, I'd say Pearce seems to have some solid ideas when writing for film, and I'd hope that he'd have a clever way to tie all these Ghostbusters stories together. From the get go, the next GHOSTBUSTERS probably should have featured a team consistering of both sexes, but what do I know? All I care about is a story that's entertaining and makes sense. If Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS and Pearce's version accomplish that, then you'll hear little complaint from me.

Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS hits theaters on July 22, 2016.

I still want to see Emma Stone get in on this action!
