Drew Pearce confirms finished Ghostbusters script with Tatum & Pratt in mind

07.29.2015

There were a lot of rumors flying around about a third GHOSTBUSTERS film before Paul Feig announced his all-female take. Following the initial negative feedback, it almost seemed like another male Ghostbusters team was announced in response. Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt were some of the early names tossed around, and they sure as hell didn't seem to know what was going on, but we finally have some word from someone who does. Enter screenwriter Drew Pearce (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION, IRON MAN 3), who has just finished his draft on "the other" GHOSTBUSTERS film.

Drew Pearce on his GHOSTBUSTERS draft featuring an alternate team:

I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks. Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers — who did CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and are doing CIVIL WAR at the moment — and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it. Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!

Whether or not Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt will take part:

That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project. Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.

If his story ties into the original or Feig's take:

My personal inclination is to try and make everything occur in the same ’Ghostbusters’ universe, because I feel, as a fan, that’s what I would want. Standing here in New York, you just wanna tie it all together. Whether that happens or not we’ll see, but I’ve certainly given them the tools to do that, I hope.

While I didn't love IRON MAN 3, I'd say Pearce seems to have some solid ideas when writing for film, and I'd hope that he'd have a clever way to tie all these Ghostbusters stories together. From the get go, the next GHOSTBUSTERS probably should have featured a team consistering of both sexes, but what do I know? All I care about is a story that's entertaining and makes sense. If Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS and Pearce's version accomplish that, then you'll hear little complaint from me.

Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS hits theaters on July 22, 2016.

I still want to see Emma Stone get in on this action!

Ghostbusters without the original guys or at least without their strong presence is pointless. Adding Tatter makes it a no go, will never see this if he is within a thousand miles of it.

Who even knows if this gets made. But the casting choices of Tatum and Pratt seem way off for this movie. Part of the appeal of the original Ghostbusters is that the characters were literally your average people. In fact, 2 out of 4 were huge nerds (Spangler and Stantz), 1 of 4 was a scientist (Venkman), and 1 of 4 was an average joe taking a job (Winston).

Casting Tatum who just can't pull off a scientist and Pratt who is jacked to shit, just seem like the casting choices are off. Not

I really do not want another Ghostbusters as it falls in that category of B.T.T.F., Gremlins, etc. in my mind.

With that being said,

They should give Max Landis a shot. I really liked the ideas he had for Ghostbusters.

Wwwhhhhhhhhhyyyyyy?

The original Ghostbusters trio were three of the funniest guys around. And people like Eddie Murphy and John Candy were considered, two of the other funniest people. At least the female reboot has a huge comedic stars in Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, even if a lot of people don't like McCarthy. But where does it make sense to cast pretty boy action stars? Chris Pratt is at least known for being funny onscreen, but even he feels like too much of an action star. The Ghostbusters were also

Just because Channing Tatum was funny in the Jump Street movies does not mean he has any place as a Ghostbuster. I realize it doesn't have to be limited to a comedic cast, but if the new film is only muscular good looking dudes it just won't have the same feel to it.

I guess what I'm really saying is please don't let Channing Tatum anywhere near this. I'm sure the female reboot will be successful and all because of the Ghostbusters name, but let's not jump the gun here. We don't need separate Ghostbusters movies. Why not just add dudes to the sequel of the reboot? Ugh. Hollywood is frustrating.

Rant over.

'Why not just add dudes to the sequel of the reboot?"

Ummm no. Sorry, still no. In fact, please, no Paul Feig sequels. Ever. Let that just be a one time thing. Like when you got drunk at the office party and woke up naked next to your boss in his office.

Oh trust me, I completely agree with you. I don't like seeing this Paul Feig "reboot" either. But I think we can agree that a sequel is inevitable. There is too much of a Ghostbusters familiarity and people will flock to this movie. Even if it's mildly profitable, they'll make a sequel. Because Hollywood. And since a sequel is inevitable, I'd much rather they just combine these projects as opposed to making separate Ghosbusters films that take place at the same time but following different

You know guys, Bill Murray may be one of the greatest comedy actor of all time, but never forget that he is the sole reason why we never get that proper Ghostbusters sequel AND the existence of this Paul Feig all female Ghostbusters movie. First he refused to appear in the Ghostbusters 3 production even when all of the original actors and the script and the funding have come together, stalling production long enough until the death of Harold Ramis utterly destroyed the project. It's all his fault. I HATE HIM NOW

I don't "hate" him, but yeah this is all true. He's great, but he's also the reason we didn't get to have nice things (ie, one more genuine Ghostbusters movie)

Would be awesome casting if this turned out to be true. But they should just scrap both films altogether and just start over and combine both films ideas.

And I would love to see Sam Rockwell cast as a Ghostbuster. He has the perfect persona for it.

Anything to make Paul Feig shut up and hopefully this new script will be better than that film.

Meh.

It already sounds better than Kate McKinnon starring in anything. I kinda hope most of the cast from the female movie dies and gets replaced by funnier people...

Why is it so hard for them to get Ghostbusters right? Yes, this seems better than the Feig film, but now we have to action stars as Ghostbusters. At least these guys are skilled with comedy, but they wouldn't be my pick to take over the Ghostbusters series (maybe Pratt).

ATTN: CALLING ALL BANDWAGON JUMPERS

Chris pratt hasn't proved himself at all yet, starring in huge budget CGI-FESTS with built-in audiences doesnt constitute a star, the guy needs to put in some work rather then attach himself to established properties. Geez have you seen his interviews? I cant even force myself to smile when I watch him, lets see him carry an original property, we'll see how much charisma he has then.

He was great in Guardians, but Jurassic World sucked and he had very little to do in it.

This is a joke, right? Chris Pratt is essentially charisma and comedic ability personified. And I'm pretty certain I'm not the only person who thinks that.
