Dueling magicians: Steve Carell versus Jim Carrey in Burt Wonderstone?

10.11.2011by:

Several years ago, Steve Carell was stealing scenes from an overpaid Jim Carrey in BRUCE ALMIGHTY.

Now it's Carrey who migh be joining a Carell vehicle, the New Line comedy BURT WONDERSTONE. Carell is playing the titular magician, a fading old-school Vegas stage performer who finds his thunder stolen by a hotshot "street magician" -- a role that would seem like a perfect match for Carrey's animated antics.

(Although since his role is unspecified by Deadline, it's conceivable that Carrey could be playing Carell's partner, whom he loses to become a solo act.)

Interestingly, Carrey was previously circling the lead part of the aging magician, while a younger actor was being sought to play the David Blaine-style adversary.

The movie is being directed by TV regular Don Scardino ("30 Rock"), with a script that started with HORRIBLE BOSSES writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein before Jason Reitman (JUNO) took a crack at it.

Extra Tidbit: Would anyone else rather see Carell face off with Paul Rudd (again) instead?

Carrell's movies

Since 40 Year Old Virgin, this guy's movies haven't been too hot, I really hope this turns it around for him, and gets him out of this Date Night, Crazy Stupid Love crap...

Jim Carrey all the way!

Paul Rudd, NO THANKS!

Bring in Jim Carrey anytime and your MONEY!

And yes, Bruce Almighty was probably Steve Carrell's break out performance, but Jim Carrey still owned in that film.

Jim Carrey Is Funny

Jim Carrey is awesome, I don't care what people say. He's the only one who can do what he does and not look like he's trying too hard or faking it. I'd love to see a Carrey - Carell stint, this time with both of them being established comedic acts with their own styles and wits and sense of humor. If done right, it could be hilarious. If done wrong, it could be Date Night.

meh

Throw in a couple of cameos from Tony Wonder and Gob Bluth (so long as Buster is assisting that is) and I'd be more tempted.....

Carell outdid Carrey in every scene they shared in Bruce Almighty and that was effectively his breakout role. By this point it'll just be cruel to watch them side by side!

Nope sorry Jim Carrey is done. Once you go public with your crazy you dont come back. Carrey can never be taken serious ever again (even as a comedic actor).

Give the role to Charlie Day, him and Steve Carrell would be awesome!

Carrey

Love Paul Rudd, but he doesn't have the desperateness that Carrey is capable of. And to expand on that: Carrey needs a hit comedy. He's in a rut. And seems to be losing his mind (anyone seen his obnoxiously terrible Twitter page? Jesus Christ!). This might be exactly what Carrey needs to reaffirm that he isn't the butt of a cosmic joke. I'm all for it.
