Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth's movie Empire State is going straight to Blu-ray

06.19.2013

Despite his incredible run of box office success with FAST FIVE, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, PAIN & GAIN, and FAST AND FURIOUS 6, Dwayne Johnson cannot save every movie he is in. In fact, his latest movie EMPIRE STATE isn't going to tally any box office numbers at all.

According to Blu-ray.com, Dito Montiel's latest film will be going directly to home video on September 3, 2013. The studio behind EMPIRE STATE, Lionsgate, must have zero faith in the movie to make a move like this. Here's the plot synopsis:

A drama centered on two childhood friends who plan to rob an armored car depository, and the NYPD officer who stands in their way.

Aside from Johnson and Hemsworth, EMPIRE STATE also stars Emma Roberts, Nikki Reed, James Ransone and Michael Angarano. Director Montiel made a splash years ago with A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS while his most recent film, A SON OF NO ONE starring Channing Tatum, bombed with a total gross of less than $50,000.

This news follows the Robert De Niro and John Travolta film KILLING SEASON getting a brief theatrical run before going to Blu-ray and contributes to the overall changes in the feature film industry where even bankable names cannot guarantee box office results.

From the trailer I saw, it looks better than movies that get theatrical releases. WTF?

A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints is an amazing, criminally underrated film with the best performance Channing Tatum has ever given. It just sucks that Montiel hasn't repeated the same great quality in any of his films after that one. Fighting and Son of No One were very sub par films.

Say what you will about his films...but

The Tooth Fairy was awesome! My kids genuinely believe that the Rock visits in the night when one of them lose a tooth.

It hurt his career along with The Game Plan. He shouldn't have done family movies.

I hate to say this but nowadays, there is no such thing as "bankable names".
There are popular, famous actors who give movies a better chance but noone promises a 100% sure hit. Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis, Avenger guys, Twilight-kids, etc. Not one of them.

This is where the Rock belongs, straight-to-DVD. Lets face it, he's not a bankable star and he sucks as an actor.

Really? You couldn't be more wrong. The Fast & Furious was petering out until he came in. He's had a movie in the top 10 for over 15 straight weeks.

I like The Rock but.....

....he's not the huge box office draw people make him out to be. His most success is when he latches onto already established movie franchises.

Every movie he's been in this year had a decent opening slot. I can't remember if they all made #1 on opening week or not. True that G.I. Joe and Fast and Furious have been bigger hits than his other, original output.

Most of his movies should be going straight to Blu-Ray, like Snitch for example.
