If you thought FASTER might mark the moment Dwayne Johnson (FAST FIVE, THE OTHER GUYS) stopped making family films, think again.

THR's Heat Vision is reporting that the actor is in negotiations to star in JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND from director Brad Peyton (CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE), the sequel to 2008's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.

Johnson, replacing the now departed Brendan Fraser due to scheduling conflicts, joins recent Spider-Man hopeful Josh Hutcherson (RED DAWN, ZATHURA) who will be reprising his role from the first film. Here's Heat Vision with more:

Johnson will play the boyfriend of Hutcherson's mom, who Hutcherson is forced to bring on a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather. The script is loosely based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island."

JOURNEY 2 will be shot in 3D and is looking to start production in North Carolina and Hawaii this October.

WOAH! This movie needed a sequel? WHY?! I totally dont get it...but now, The ROCK wants to star in it..NO! I think the Rock should get out of family movies for a little while..but hopefully the movie does well for the Rock's sake.

You seriously want to live on the scraps that Brendan Fraser turns down? We should kidnap 'The Rock' tie him to chair, super glue his eyelids open and make him watch The Expendables 1000 times in a row.

I don't mind this at all because we are getting two new action movies from him, Faster and Fast and Furious 5, so I don't mind him doing a kids movie in between a couple of action movies once in awhile. I give him credit for doing these movies because obviously he really does enjoy doing kids movies and why should we judge him in trying to making kids happy and doing a movie so said kids can go...

I like Dwayne Johnson. I think he is a nice guy he does stuff for kids blah, blah, blah. But I wish he would do something new. I mean these kids movies are getting old. Do something to set yourself apart. Not even action roles, do a drama or something. A lot of potential is going to waste.

I was a fan of Dwayne (a la Southland Tales, Walking Tall, etc), but since he took this family-centric, career killing move, I'm not watching anything he does.

So, it's been a while since I read The Mysterious Island but if memory serves me correctly **SPOILER ALERT** it was Captain Nemo who was the Island's big mystery. (An unofficial sequel to 20,000 Leagues.) **END SPOILER** I'm guessing the key phrase here is the script is "loosely" based on Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island.

Doesnt Dwayne have a twitter or a facebook we can bombard with just how bad this idea is? I mean seriously? A crappy sequel to a crappy Brendon Frazier movie? This has direct to DVD written all over it. This isn't just a bad idea because we want Rock to make action movies, this is just a bad idea for any self respecting actor... This has cinema career killer written all over it.
