Dwight Yoakam decides to drop out of The Lone Ranger

Feb. 17, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Well, this is sort of disappointing.

Dwight Yoakam has said "happy trails" to THE LONE RANGER. Yoakam was originally cast in the Gore Verbinski directed film as a villain. Now they will have to find someone else to play the part of Butch Cavendish, the leader of the gang that attacks the Lone Ranger and leaves him for dead.

Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bonham Carter, and Barry Pepper are still all on board as far as we know. Everything is still on track even though the fall production date was scrapped and moved to mid-February. Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were also asked to bring the budget down from $250 million to $215 million.

The apparent reason for Yoakam's departure is due to a scheduling issue.

Even though the movie is said to still be coming our way, I just feel like it's going to get pushed back. It really feels like a massive pipe dream that will inevitably get clogged. I'm interested in seeing a finish product since I used to watch the show when I was younger. But does anyone else want to see it on the big screen?

It sounds like a problem of too many cooks in the kitchen and too many egos to be massaged. I think a Lone Ranger movie with Armie Hammer as the Ranger and Depp as Tonto would be truly awesome, but when a straight western can't be budgeted for less than $200+ million, those are problems that can't be worked around. Lets be real: A Lone Ranger movie shouldn't cost more than $100 million, even with the upfront fees of Depp and Verbinski. And yet... we're at a stalemate over a budget between

Tsk, tsk, tsk...

$250 million for a western?!?

What the hell is going to be in this movie that justifies that kind of cost? Is the Lone Ranger going to fight Optimus Prime while singing Metallica songs?

I have mixed feelings about the movie. I like the fact that Johnny Deep, Armie Hammer, Carter and Pepper will be in the movie. The part I am worried about is how true will the actors look and act like the original characters and the story be like the TV series.
I would like to see a Lone Ranger movie that is very true to the series, not a movie that flashy or very loosely based on the TV series.

I know that Depp can bring in the chicks, but I'm not sure they're gonna pay for a western. They should have tried to make this with a smaller budget, Cowboys & Aliens flopped after all.

Budget reduction or not

What's with the astronomical cost?! Are they shooting a trilogy back-to-back??

Good

I hope this doesn't get made. Just feels like garbage and I like the Ranger. Maybe Dwight decided he'd rather go back to spankin' Choclate's ass in Crank 3.

Cowboys and Aliens all over again.

To replace Dwight, how about Sam Rockwell?

TO be honest, I'm sick of seeing Johnny Depp. Don't get me wrong he's a fine actor. He's just in bloody EVERYTHING and has been for years. I can not watch a film with Johnny Depp in it and see the character he's playing. I can ONLY see him. I honestly wish the man would retire to that private island he owns.
