Dwight Yoakam, Helena Bonham Carter and Barry Pepper are in talks to join The Lone Ranger

Jul. 19, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Dwight Yoakam, Helena Bonham Carter and Barry Pepper are currently in talks to join Johnny Depp in Disney's THE LONE RANGER.

Gore Verbinski will be helming the film which takes a slightly different turn with Tonto (Depp) taking on more of the lead as the Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) is left for dead in this story.

Here are the details on their roles: "If a deal makes, Carter will play the madam of a brothel who deals with gentlemen and scoundrels. Yoakam, currently shooting Billy Bob Thorntons Jayne Mansfields Car, will play Butch Cavendish, leader of the gang that attacks the ranger and leaves his for dead. Pepper, Emmy-nominated for his turn as Bobby Kennedy in The Kennedys, will act as a military officer."

Tom Wilkinson signed on already to star as a railroad tycoon with dubious intentions.

Production will start mid-October in Texas and New Mexico.

Never was into the Lone Ranger much but doesn't this film seem to be shitting on the original already? I mean is the Lone Ranger even going to be in it if he's "left for dead"? If that's the cause why call it the Lone Ranger at all, call it Tonto instead if that's who the main character is. I blame all of this on the casting of Johnny Depp as Tonto. God forbid the studio lets Depp be a SUPPORTING character in this. No he's gotta be bumped up to the star. Plus as someone already said Depp

Plus as someone already said Depp passing as a Native American is laughable (yeah yeah i know he's got some Native American blood in him but he don't look it). He will always look like a white boy trying to be a Native American which is why it worked so effectively in "Dead Man". Here not so much

Yoakem is a good actor and I'm sure he'll make a memorable character. Same goes for Wilkinson. But I've never understood the love for HBC. She has never been anything but annoying in every movie she's in. Plus Barry Pepper is a joke. I admit I've only seen him in maybe 4 or 5 movies but he was awful in each one.

Being ambushed, left for dead, and found by Tonto has ALWAYS been part of the Lone Ranger's origin story.

I'm all for Barry Pepper, but Bonham Carter should stay the hell away from this, lest people think it's another Burton film that destroys childhood memories.

C'mon, Bonham Carter had a career before Burton, and let's not forget she was just up for an Oscar this year for a non-Burton flick.

Burton's nepotism is forgivable considering Helena Bonham Carter is a great actress. I have no problem with her in any movie.

I'm gonna get negatives for this

but I'm still not liking the fact that Johnny Depp is playing Tonto. Jay Silverheels is spinning in his grave, and every Native actor in Hollywood is flipping both Depp and Verbinski the bird.

To be fair, given Depp's complexion and demeanor, of all the non-Native American actors who might play a Native American, he's probably best equipped aesthetically. Though, your point absolutely stands.
