Solo: A Star Wars Story on track for $160-170 million four-day opening

There are several things that come to mind when thinking about the Star Wars movies: blasters, spaceships, lightsabers, and that sweet, sweet cheddar cheese. Oh yes, the Star Wars movies sure do rake in the dough, and the upcoming SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY should be no different. The movie’s early tracking numbers have come out, and all signs point to yet another massive Star Wars opening.

According to the early opening weekend projections, SOLO is poised to make anywhere between $160-170 million during its four-day Memorial Day opening. This is in line with the last Star Wars spinoff movie, ROGUE ONE, which opened to $155 million back in December 2016. Should it come in below these predictions, it’s still likely to top the current Memorial Day weekend champ, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END ($139 million).

The film from Ron Howard (after taking over for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller) is the origin story of the beloved character Han Solo, with Alden Ehrenreich starring as Solo, with Donald Glover playing Lando Calrissian. The movie’s cast is rounded out by Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Paul Bettany, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Jon Favreau and Joonas Suotamo. The movie will have its premiere at, of all places, the Cannes Film Festival on May 15.

These tracking numbers could always change, as predictions are often a little low until we get closer to release (see BLACK PANTHER and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR). With SOLO, I think the numbers are pretty spot-on. The anticipation for this movie is about as high ROGUE ONE, if not a little lower given all the behind-the-scenes drama. No matter what the movie will do well because, honestly, are people just gonna not see the Han Solo movie? Are they out of their minds?!

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY opens May 25.
