Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Heart! Sony is ready to give us a Captain Planet movie

Guys. Guys. Guys. Guess what? One of our favorite childhood animated series from the 90s is making its way to the big screen. Which one is it? I’m sure you have a million guesses but did you say…wait for it…

CAPTAIN PLANET AND THE PLANETEERS?!

First thing that comes to mind with this live-action adaptation is: Will Don Cheadle be available? Can we not just expand on the Funny or Die skit?

This isn’t the first time we are hearing about such an idea. In fact, we brought it to you first in 2011 and now we’re just getting a move on it. Turns out that Sony Pictures are picking up the rights to acquire the material. The adaptation will be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford.

For those of you who never had the chance to know the glory of CAPTAIN PLANET AND THE PLANETEERS, THR already has the story set up for you:

Captain Planet told the story of five teens from around the world — North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America (if this isn’t tailored for today’s international marketplace, I don’t know what is) — that are given powers by Gaia, the earth spirit, in order to protect the planet from the devastation of polluters.
When their powers are not enough, the teens combine to summon a superhero named Captain Planet.
The Captain and the Planeteers fought villains such as Dr. Blight, Verminous Skumm, Duke Nukem and Looten Plunder. (The series initially attracted high-profile celebrities to play the baddies — Sting, Meg Ryan and James Coburn among them.)

It was cheesy as f*ck but awesome all the same. In the 90s, people were being more conscious of the environment and what we could do to conserve our natural resources for future generations. They tried to get kids involved as well, and CAPTAIN PLANET served as one of those ideas. I use tto have one of the power rings though I can’t remember which at the time. I’ll have to get another once they get some merchandise out for this.

Don’t worry. I’ve provided you with the opening/ending theme and the Don Cheadle skit. Best of both worlds.
