Eastern Promises 2?

03.30.2009

David Cronenberg is working on making a sequel to EASTERN PROMISES. He told MTV that:

We are moving forward with it... We all are excited about the idea of doing a sequel... We are going to have a meeting very soon between me, Steve Knight and Paul Webster to discuss what the script would be... I have some very strong ideas about what I would like to see, but I would like to hear what they have to say as well. And then after that, if all goes well, Steve goes away and writes a great script. If we all like it, we make it.

Its the first time Ive ever been in a situation where I actually want to do a sequel to something... Ive never had the desire to do that before. But in this case, I thought we had unfinished business with those characters. I didnt feel that we had finished with Nikolai and we had done a lot of research that was more than we could stuff into that one movie.

It's a pity that I'm an idiot because I bet if I were a hardcore intellectual I would appreciate David Cronenberg. Unfortunately, I'm a moron. That's why I enjoyed SPEED RACER. It was the colors. And Christina Ricci. But mostly the colors. And the monkey!
Extra Tidbit: Cronenberg was going to direct TOTAL RECALL.

If Viggo Mortensen or Naomi Watts are not involved, this is a bad, bad idea. Take away one, you lose my interest completely.

The first one wasn't that good, so not interested at all.

Eastern promises was awesome.. my mum liked it too. She keeps asking if they're making a sequel, because of the unfinished business.

great news

Cronenberg is an amazing director (and Canadian, woo) and a sequel is something that I'd go and see, there is definitely a lot of story that can be told. Eastern Lies perhaps?

Very good news, although for some reason I thought there had already been talk of a sequel (maybe there was, but now it's official?).

And Dallasdowdy, I also enjoyed Speed Race although I can understand why some people might not have. Although I will agree on one point, the acting was much better then what was really required.

Oh, Thank God! Every time someone asks me what I think about EP my answer is always divided. I loved it and felt it was great, but also felt it was incomplete (i.e. you can tell there's more they want to do with it) so knowing that they are working on the sequel is great news indeed.

Yep

Smarmy Douche has got it right. I enjoyed Eastern Promises, but a more in depth look at the inner workings, sans a fish out of water protagonist, could be a great film.

Eastern Promises has loads of untapped potential that they barely skimmed the top of.

Bring Viggo back and go balls deep in the Russian mafia's culture and infrastructure, akin in depth to GoodFellas or The Godfather, and you've got yourself an amazing sequel.

Eastern Promises was one of my favorite movies of 2007, and I'd love to see where they could take this story. Viggo's one of the best actors working today, I still can't wait to see The Road when its finally released.

Hmmm

I loved EP, one of the best movies in recent years and Viggo should have gotten the Oscar for it. But I'm not sure a sequel is necessary, but as long as Cronenberg, Mortensen and Co. are in control, it could be pretty sweet.

Good Good

I'll welcome a sequel and, if done correctly, continuing the franchise beyond that.

P.S. - Speed Racer was a FANTASTIC film despite what anyone says. I enjoyed it quite thoroughly. The acting was superb, the effects and style were amazing, the races were well-done, the dialogue was spot on, the comedy was golden and it was just generally a great film. The Wachowskis really do need more projects.

There's definitely more ground that could be covered here. Nikolai is a very interesting character, and his motives were never fully explained. The real question is whether or not Naomi Watts' character will have a reason to return, since she's kind of an outsider. Albeit, our window into the world of the Russian mafia. But Cronenberg is a better-than-average director, and this could turn into a Godfather-esque epic.

I remember hearing something about an Eastern trilogy, which I'd be totally ok with. Normally I don't like sequels to more indie type stuff, but I agree that there are definite places to go with the story.

HELL YEAH

Bring it on! I trust Cronenberg 100% to pull this off the right way.
