Ed Helms set to play Detective Frank Drebin in a reboot of The Naked Gun!

Dec. 13, 2013by:

Now this is some reboot news I can get behind. Paramount has tapped Ed Helms to play legendary Detective Frank Drebin in a reboot of THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD! Previously portrayed by Leslie Nielsen with absolute comedic genius in both the 1982 TV series and the subsequent films that followed: THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD!, THE NAKED GUN 2 1/2: THE SMELL OF FEAR, and THE NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT. Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, Reno 911!) will script the reboot.

I'm sure there will be some moans and groans over this, but I think this sounds like a good fit for Helms. He's got the perfect blend of awkward comedic skills and can certainly play the straight man that's just a little off. With Nielsen passing away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of some hilarious (and not-so-hilarious) spoof films, it'll be nice to see one that's actually funny again. Just keep Seltzer and Friedberg the hell away from this.

No word on release, director, or additional cast, but expect to hear more as this develops.

Extra Tidbit: Helms has also been linked to the next iteration of the National Lampoon's Family Vacation films, another reboot, which again I think would be great. Agree/Disagree? Let's hear it.

Nope...

Great actor but

Frank Drebin is sacred, just leave him be.
"I'd known her for years. We used to go to all the police functions together. Ah, how I loved her, but she had her music. I think she had her music. She'd hang out with the Chicago Male Chorus and Symphony. I don't recall her playing an instrument or being able to carry a tune. Yet she was on the road 300 days of the year. In fact, I bought her a harp for Christmas. She asked me what it was."

A great casting choice regardless of the finished film. While I'm usually not one to support reboots this actually has some potential and If we start getting funny spoofs out of Hollywood again, all the better. I'm somewhat optimistic and I like the Lennon and Garret team (they're funny even if they have made some terrible stuff as well).

I don't see how this could work, since the character and film series are based completely around Leslie's unique comedic style. The writing, the puns, the sight gags, the delivery, etc etc etc.

I hate that Hollywood keeps remaking everything, but seriously, fuck you audience for contently supporting these remakes. Remake = artistic theft, yet people continue to support this piracy of someone else's hard work.

So much hate.
I'll make my judgement when it's released, I like Ed Helms and it seems I'm in the minority of people willing to give him a chance.

Ed Helms would make a great Drebin

Ed would make a great Drebin and could start a new Franchise but it won't work unless you got the comedy right. Keep anyone who has done a scary movie spoof or any of the other pop culture spoof movies far far away from it and it could work.

Nothing against Ed Helms, I think he's pretty funny, but booooo to this news. Leave well enough alone. Some things don't need a remake. But for the sake of argument, if you have to remake it shouldn't you find another older comedian to play the role? Isn't the point that he's been on the Police Squad forever? Been a dimwit forever but somehow been successful? I would rather see Steve Martin in this role than Ed Helms.

Nothing against Helms. I think he's super funny and he's had some great roles so far. When they said they were going to do a relaunch of the vacation movie and have Helms play a grown up Rusty - I was actually excited about it. His brand of comedy cold certainly match Chevy Chase when he was good.

But I dunno, I just can't see anyone doing Frank Drebin other than Leslie Nielson. He made the role iconic and I don' think anyone can deliver such hilarious lines with such deadpan humour. I

I mean Helms is more funny straight man with some slapstick sprinkled throughout. Not deadpan humour with goofy lines.

I'm going to say it. Naked Gun is too intelligent of a comedy to be recreated with any current talent in Hollywood.

Carell maybe. Helms. Hell no.

Nothing against the guy, he's funny, but he's much better in the "straight-man prone to freakout" roles as seen in the Hangover. I cannot imagine him doing doing deadpan as well as Carell, much less replacing a master like Nielsen or Chase.

"He's got the perfect blend of awkward comedic skills"....The role was already "perfectly" played by Leslie Nielsen and an updated version is completely unnecessary.

I swear Ed Helms is being sought for every single comedy lately. It's like some dumbass executive just says "get that guy from the hangover, hes recognizable and we'll make money because of that." Helms to me is just annoying to watch.

No doubt, Ed helms can play a sort of Drebin-esque character. But remaking/rebooting a parody series is about as asinine as it gets. Leslie Nielsen is Frank Drebin just as much as Peter Sellers is Inspector Clouseau. There could be many imitators, but no one will ever come close to the original.

Why?

Why even reboot the franchise? How about just creating a brand new cop/comedy franchise of your own that will hopefully do well enough that you can spawn further sequels? The well is running dry. Why not refill it with some new ideas instead of going back to it and scraping the mildew at the bottom?

The ZAZ team and Leslie Nelsen made Naked Gun work

This is not the type of character that should be played by anyone else. Peter Sellers is Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau and Leslie Neilsen is Frank Drebin. In top of that the humor is specific to the ZAZ team and without them it's definitely not going to be the same.

Remember Steve Martin in Pink Panther? It's easy to think a popular comedic actor can recreate that magic, but Steve missed the subtlety, the acting with the eyes, the hijinks happening in the background. Ed Helms will be so over the top he'll completely miss the subtlety and the writers will too. Leave it alone

Ok, if they really find it necessary to do this they should follow the formula of Ed's other film "Vacation"...Frank Drebin Jr.

I can actually see a tag line...."He's got the name, but not the skills"

Of course playing "sons" in most of your films could come back to bite you in the ass....but then it could also prove bad for the studio (raise your hand if you remember "Son of the Pink Panther")

Drebin wasn't the only member of Police Squad so why a reboot? why not just 'from the files of Police Squad'? Certainly link it in with the previous show/movies but there's plenty of material they can pull from/make up.

The last I heard Vacation wasn't a reboot, it was a sequel with Helms playing Rusty Griswold.
