Eddie Murphy joins Ben Stiller's team in Tower Heist

10.13.2010

Eddie Murphy has another job. He has been cast in Brett Ratner's TOWER HEIST opposite Ben Stiller.

Oddly enough, when the project was developing back in 2005, Murphy was the lead with an all African American cast that included Chris Rock. This was when the film was called TRUMP HEIST. Suddenly that was dropped and the project just continued to flounder until it was revived this year.

Now it's the story of, "an overworked residence manager (Stiller) of a posh highrise leads a team of the building's operations and maintenance workers on an intricately choreographed heist of its penthouse tenant, a Wall Street capitalist (Alan Alda) who defrauded the rank-and-file staff of their pensions." Murphy is taking on the role of a safe-cracking thug who might betray Stiller and his gang. He is also executive producing on the film as well.

Jeff Nathanson (CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) is rewriting the screenplay by Ted Griffin (OCEAN'S ELEVEN).

Anyone else ready for a hardcore Eddie Murphy comeback? Ditch the fat suits and flat comedies and bring back the old school Murphy.

Extra Tidbit: COMING TO AMERICA is one of the most quotable comedies. Arsenio Hall for the win.

Murphy mystefies me.

Everything since Bofinger has been crap (except maybe Dreamgirls if that's your thing), but he's still really funny in interviews on talk shows. I think he's still GOT IT in him, but it'll take great writing and a good concept to get him out of this funk. I do think this Tower Heist film is the best chance for us to see some classic Murphy.

LOL

@Terminal_83. As much as anyone would like to see an Eddie Murphy comeback, I honestly think he's too far gone. There was a glimmer of hope with his Dreamgirls role. While not "Raw" Eddie, it was a departure from "Norbit". Face it, Eddie ain't comin' back...

This is definitely perking up a little for me. But this movie either needs serious chemistry and star wattage, (which it sounds like might be happening), or a twist on the heist genre to get me interested. Heist movies are pretty boring for me of late, with "The Town" a notable exception.

Add Alda and you got my ticket!!

I can't help but feel compelled to see any Alan Alda films in theaters if possible. Just hearing he is in this blows away the fact that Ratner is directing.

Stiller and Eddie could be pretty cool!

sounds cool, and maybe it would give Eddie a chance to get back to his comic roots. With Brett directing I don't know if I trust this though. I guess we will see. Glad it's not Uwe Boll directing!!

I could get on board an Eddie Murphy comeback. Trading Places, 48hrs, Beverly Hills Cop were all good. Unfortunately this will not be the movie where he goes old school eddie. This sounds bad.

Ratner might be a fat donkey dick asshole but his best movies have been comedies. Hate on Rush Hour and Money Talks all you want but I fucking laugh my ass off with those. This could at least have it's moments.

I'm a big fan of Murphy and think he is one of the all time legends, so even though I do not like the director at all, this is a step in the right direction for a comeback. Anyone else think Murphy got the job because Chris Tucker wasn't available?

Have you seen Chris Tucker lately? It ain't so much that he's unavailable as it is that he's, um, unhealthy. Dude got FAT. It looks like he's following in Eddie's foot steps and tryin' the whole Fat Suit thing out...that and he's hiding from the IRS
