Eddie Murphy will lend his voice to the one and only Hong Kong Phooey

08.10.2011

"Who is this super hero? Sarge?.....No. Rosemary, the telephone operator? No. Penry, the mild-mannered janitor? ..... Could Be! Hong Kong Phooey, number one super guy. Hong Kong Phooey, quicker than the human eye."

Yeah, I had to mention the theme. That's the first thing that pops in my head when HONY KONG PHOOEY is brought up. I never watched it much myself, but my mom loved it.

Now it's being brought to the big screen as a live action/animated adaptation. Eddie Murphy will voice the classic kung-fu fighting dog. Here's some details on the story: "Penry (Murphy) stumbles into a mystic ceremony and is accidentally granted mystic powers, including the ability to walk, talk, and do kung fu. Under the tutelage of his kung fu master, Penry dons a costume and becomes Hong Kong Phooey, and with the help of his trusting sidekick Spot the cat cleans up a rogues gallery of wacky criminals."

Alex Zamm (TOOTH FAIRY 2) will be the one to helm the film.

Eddie either needs to go back to his Delirious/Raw/SNL days, or just disappear altogether.

Should be good. Shame it will suck.

I suspect they will be using similar 'realistic' techniques as they did with underdog.

And from the director of ToothFairy 2?! Jeez, that says it all.

I actually really liked Eddie Murphy's voice work in Shrek, and if they allow him to make the character his own I think it has a chance. If however he tries to mimic Scatman Crothers unique voice, it will suck like nothing has sucked before.

You had me at Tooth Fairy 2. This is going to rock. When has Eddie Murphy ever done a bad movie?

How about a new tv animated show instead of a big screen adaptation instead?

I loved the cartoon and I'll try to keep an open mind. However, I think they're probably going to f*** up my childhood memories. The last good cartoon adaptation was...yeah, I've got nothing.

kids dont know hong kong phooey. thus they're bringing him back to introduce him to a whole new generation instead of spending effort in creating a new character.
