Eddie Murphy would be game to do a "funny" superhero movie

09.19.2016

Despite what dissenting hipsters or right-wing conspiracy theorists may say, this is a great time to be alive. Virtual reality is a thing, our presidential election resembles a sitcom, and Eddie Murphy is taking back the spotlight. Okay, he may not have a bevy of premium roles on the conveyer belt, but the man is obviously more focused, and has even contemplated a return the stand-up. However, you aren’t a Hollywood big-wig until you’ve taken on some kind of role in a major superhero movie. As far as I’m concerned, Chadwick Boseman is a bigger star than Tom Cruise.

So during an interview with Mashable, Eddie Murphy was asked if he would ever do a superhero movie, and the answer was very...Eddie Murphy:

“I’m kind of long in the tooth to fly in in a cape now, so I’d have to be like the voice of reason or somebody. “Don’t do that, super-fellow! Or we need such-and-such.” I would do a superhero movie if it was funny and we were making fun of superhero movies and I figured out how to do something funny. But even I don’t buy me flying in with a cape on and you know, fucking everybody up, having lasers shoot out. See this? Doesn’t this look like bullshit? What would you call this? Who would I be?
“...If you seen a poster like this on the street, and lasers are shooting out my fingers and I had a cape on. You would go, "get the fuck out of here."

Nowadays when people in the business talk about superhero movies they either are clamoring to be given the chance to be in one, or are dogging the whole industry. Murphy’s response is, frankly, incredibly grounded. He’s not trashing the business, but is also understanding of the fact he probably isn’t the right choice to play a hero of man. Basically, he’ll do a comic book movie if it has a place for him and his comedic talents. I can see that place coming in the form of a KICK-ASS-style flick, or perhaps even something like DEADPOOL.  Can you imagine Axel Foley meeting Wade Wilson? Hilarity would ensue, ensue I tell ya!

Eddie Murphy can be seen in MR. CHURCH in theaters now.

I don't see him in any superhero franchise at this point and I think he was just answering a question any actor with relative fame will get about superhero movies, but at this point I'm glad he seems to be excited about making movies again. He could have a nice late-stage dramedy career if he picks the right projects, kind of like what Bill Murray has done. At the very least, give him another stand-up special.

Ok

Dude, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to bring any political commentary here, even in passing. As for the info, it could work. We shall see, if it ever happens.

First, do people realize he's just answering a reporter's questions? Do we actually believe he's speaking in a vacuum about being in a superhero movie?

Second, the man has done serious damage to his image over the past 20 years, but there are absolutely people who would love to see him return to stand-up, or whatever, not because he needs it (he really doesn't, the man's rolling in it with all 8 or 9 of his kids), but because it would just be nice to see if he's still got it.

I'm not

I'm not exactly excited for Mr. Church from a movie perspective, but as a chance to see Murphy stretch at acting, it could mean more quality stuff from this guy. Or not.

This sounds more like he's saying "no" to playing a superhero and would moreso be up for a supporting role as either a mentor or comedic relief, or possible both. Which could work well in any Marvel movie, or even a Deadpool movie for sure.

Murphy really does need to realize his movie career is gone. Get a well written sitcom and start on the comeback trail.

Eddie had his chance on making people talk about possibly casting him in a comeback role when he came back to SNL. He had zero spark and wasn't funny in the least.

Allegedly he was supposed to bring back his Bill Cosby impression (the one Kenan Thompson ended up doing), but didn't feel like that was something to make light of. Should've seen him when he accepted the Mark Twain award.

a shame such a great talent is banned from Hollywood !

I know, his carrer went downhill when he started doing shitty family comedies, but still, this guy is such a comedy Genius, he deserves a huge come back ! A big budget, well written Bevelly Hills cop 4 would be that movie !
