Edgar Wright and Johnny Depp team up for remake of The Night Stalker

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Edgar Wright fans rejoice! It appears that the director of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, and HOT FUZZ will be teaming up with Johnny Depp in a remake of the ABC series THE NIGHT STALKER.

Depp would play tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak, played by Darren McGavin in the 70’s telepic series, who “covered crime for a tabloid and his cases always led to supernatural perpetrators that included zombies, vampires, werewolves and aliens. Of course, neither his editor nor anyone else would believe him or allow him to run what seemed like outrageous stories. But Kolchak would put himself in grave danger each episode.”

It’s likely that the subject material will be treated to a PG-13 audience, which some may scoff at, given Wright’s propensity for outlandish gore and violence, but I’m willing to give this a go, considering that Wright has style and energy to spare. I loved SCOTT PILGRIM and that was PG-13, so I don’t think we need an R out of Wright in order to get a great film.

A team up with Wright and Depp feels like some movie magic can be made. Wright will begin development on THE NIGHT STALKER with Depp from the ground up, so keep an eye out for developments. In the meantime, Wright also has Marvel’s ANT MAN on his plate and Depp can next be seen in THE LONE RANGER.

PS: JoBlo himself was all excited about this bit of news today as it involves one of his favorite actors & directors. Incidentally, Edgar Wright was cool enough to re-tweet our JoBlo Movie Podcast SHAUN OF THE DEAD commentary track via his Twitter account yesterday. Thanks!
