Edgar Wright and Johnny Depp team up for remake of The Night Stalker

02.22.2012

Edgar Wright fans rejoice! It appears that the director of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, and HOT FUZZ will be teaming up with Johnny Depp in a remake of the ABC series THE NIGHT STALKER.

Depp would play tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak, played by Darren McGavin in the 70's telepic series, who "covered crime for a tabloid and his cases always led to supernatural perpetrators that included zombies, vampires, werewolves and aliens. Of course, neither his editor nor anyone else would believe him or allow him to run what seemed like outrageous stories. But Kolchak would put himself in grave danger each episode."

It's likely that the subject material will be treated to a PG-13 audience, which some may scoff at, given Wright's propensity for outlandish gore and violence, but I'm willing to give this a go, considering that Wright has style and energy to spare. I loved SCOTT PILGRIM and that was PG-13, so I don't think we need an R out of Wright in order to get a great film.

A team up with Wright and Depp feels like some movie magic can be made. Wright will begin development on THE NIGHT STALKER with Depp from the ground up, so keep an eye out for developments. In the meantime, Wright also has Marvel's ANT MAN on his plate and Depp can next be seen in THE LONE RANGER.

PS: JoBlo himself was all excited about this bit of news today as it involves one of his favorite actors & directors. Incidentally, Edgar Wright was cool enough to re-tweet our JoBlo Movie Podcast SHAUN OF THE DEAD commentary track via his Twitter account yesterday. Thanks!

Yes!!

Kolchak was one of my fave shows as a kid. Considering it was not gorey, but was fun/scary, a PG-13 movie version sounds like just the right level.

Extra Tidbit: Neither, though Shaun of the Dead beats Hot Fuzz, hands down.

i'd see anything by Wright. and i wouldn't need a sequel to either just a movie with both Frost and Pegg

What about "Paul?" And I don't mean me. I was rather underwhelmed, even though I am currently wearing an "Evolve This" shirt with Jesus blowing Darwin's brains out...

Well I mean, the original series wasn't about the gore anyway so I don't know why they would bring up the need for an R rating. Its suspense. Not a gore filled fest

Hmm, Shaun of the Dead 2 or Hot Fuzz 2... god damn that's a hard choice. I gotta go with Hot Fuzz though. But ideally I would like the third film in the blood and ice cream trilogy.

They're supposedly working on the third film to some degree, but I see no reason why they couldn't do a Shaun or Fuzz sequel AS WELL. Also, they should be the new Ghostbusters.

More anxious for AT WORLDS END (that's still a thing, right?), although this sounds like it'll be good.

This news brings a smile to my face (the smile would surely get bigger if Pegg and Frost are also included in the cast as well).

For his Ant Man movie, it was rumored a while back that Alan Tudyk would be playing Hank Pym. That would be cool, but it might be even cooler having Depp as Pym. Especially when you consider the actors already in the Avengers lineup.

Awesome

This sounds like a fantastic move for both men here. They are both fantastic talents in their respective fields, but they are just outside of each others working circle enough for this to be a genuinely interesting and out-of-the-blue pairing.
Spaced seems so long ago...

Tidbit

I love both films, but don't think either needs a sequel. Original is best!

Totally agree. Forget a sequel for either of them. Just finish the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy with The World's End!
