Edgar Wright returns to work on Ant-Man

Jan. 13, 2011by: Mike Sampson

While it is far from a done deal, ANT-MAN is inching closer to being the next Edgar Wright film as the director confirmed to the LA Times that he's finally returned to working on the film's script. Wright says he hasn't done any work on his original draft (with his ADVENTURES OF TINTIN co-writer Joe Cornish) since he started developing SCOTT PILGRIM back in 2007 but now that his promotional obligations are complete, this week he's begun writing the script.

While he wouldn't addres specifics, Wright did say, "This one's not about about the urgency of summer tentpoles and things going into production without a script," likely referencing the IRON MAN productions. "It's slightly different than that."

Wright met with Feige earlier this week to discuss the status of ANT-MAN among other things. And if we're being frank, I hope one of those other things was gauging Wright's interest in directing IRON MAN 3. It's a longshot but if Feige had Wright's ear and didn't at least bring it up, he's not doing his full due diligence.

Ant-Man likely won't make an appearance in Joss Whedon's THE AVENGERS though Wasp, a frequent Ant-Man pal and potential theatrical co-star, is rumored to be one of the new female stars of that film.

Extra Tidbit: Is ANT-MAN the Edgar Wright movie you want to see next?

Scott Lang, not Hank Pym

That's Wright said a few years ago and I don't think this has changed. If Wasp is in the Avengers then Hank Pym must also appear so maybe he's Giant Man already. According to Wright, Scott Lang takes on the role of Ant Man after Hank Pym has passed on it.

You know Whedon did say "Fillion is Ant Man but Ant Man isn't in the movie" so I'm expecting a cameo with Fillion as Hank Pym.

If they are following the Ultimate's storyline...

The look of the Thor trailer and synopsis, the look of Cap and his synopsis, the hints in Iron Man right down to Samuel Jackson as Fury seem to point to the studios using the Ultimates storyline as a backbone...which means you can have Giant Man in the Avengers movie and still have an Ant-Man movie after. It follows the natural flow of the comics, and if done right could add a bit of adult drama to the flick.

As much as I want to see Ant-Man, I think I'd much rather see World's End first.

As awesome as ant man is going to be and let's face it its going to kill I wish the next flick was the third part of his blood and ice cream trilogy.

I'm so excited for this. Wright is the right (see what I did there?) man for the job and should bring a great Ant-Man into existence.

Now Mr. Wright, please please cast Nathan Fillion.

Fuck yeah!

All the people hating on Ant-Man can seriously eat a bowl of dicks. What's the point of talking shit about a character you know fuckall about, especially when the extremely talented Edgar Wright is attached?

Although quite emo with some of the dialogue Scott Pilgrim was a fun movie with great visuals & action. Matter of fact all of Edgar Wright's films have had some type of action set piece period yes even Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz is an underrated spectacle of brilliance. He has proven to be a great writer & director so yes bring on Ant-Man & why not give him Iron Man 3 also..take notes Mr. Feige. Wright much like Nolan has yet to make a bad film.
