Edgar Wright talks how Ant-Man will stand out

11.19.2013

When ANT-MAN hits in 2015, there's going to be some big competition with SUPERMAN VS BATMAN and THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. How will a character like ANT-MAN stand out against these titans of the big screen? When asked this very question by Entertainment Tonight, this is how director Edgar Wright responded:

ETonline: Switching gears, you're directing Ant-Man for Marvel, which is going up against some very big superheroes in the summer of 2015 (namely Superman and Batman) on the heels of Marvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron. What is it about Ant-Man? What will make people want to wear Ant-Man T-shirts and dress like him at Halloween?

Edgar Wright: I want to make him into a badass [laughs]. No, I always liked that comic and I always thought it would be an interesting thing to see in live-action. That's why I [showed] that Comic-Con test that we did for Marvel, to show this fight scene like a proof of content, like this is what the action is going to look like. I think a lot of people who maybe don't know the character sort of see that test and go, "Oh, right, I get it. It's like an action film," so that's the idea. I think people will be surprised by what kind of movie it is, and so in that respect it's something that I know is going to stand out because it's got a very different story and is a very different movie.

ETonline: What is the tone of the piece? Is it going to be humor and action, or would you say it's going to be more straightforward hero entertainment?

Wright: Well, I think the Marvel movies are funny, you know? I think generally the Iron Man films and The Avengers is funny. They're not ever in the comedy section, but they are funny and entertaining, so I think it'll be something in a similar vein to that.

Not as many people are familiar with the character of ANT-MAN like they are with Batman or Iron Man. I think the uniqueness that Hank Pym/Ant-Man offers will be a big draw for people. Wright is the perfect person to deliver the story to us. Plus Ant-Man's ability to become small will appeal to kids. "WOW! He's small just like me!" I think it has the potential to be something really cool.

I think he will deliver a fantastic end product. I am a huge Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz fan, however I found The World's End to be a bit predictable and didn't keep me interested once the blanks caught onto them. I still thought the movie was good and worth my money. But yes the fight scene in the bathroom was well done and I have a strong feeling Wright will deliver an excellent movie.

Word of mouth is gonna carry this far. And I bet it'll be a better quality movie than bat vs supes and avengers 2. I was so impressed with the fight scene in the bathroom of the world's end, it was easily one of the best fights on film I've seen in a long time that wasn't like a brutal one. Though I don't know very much about the character, I've been keeping up with this movie's progress as a fan of the director, characters like hulk and iron man who I did read, and the entire MCU. But

But regardless, after seeing that fantastic fight scene in the bathroom where you could see every move and feel the space between the actors, I couldn't wait on seeing any film of his more action oriented. I doubt he will, but if Whedon doesn't do A3, I hope they get Wright to do it (though I guess he might have a hard time with all the galaxy special effects and Thanos stuff, but I'd def like him next - or at least Whedon let him direct one of the bigger action scenes. I also hope he snags a Star Wars movie. It could be 7-9 (or I guess 8-9 - how many did Abrams sign on for)), but I'd be happy with one of the stand alones. I'd like him to do a gangster mos eisley story, or a Han Solo prequel/son type movie. The movie could actually have the mos eisley mob stuff and either be a Han prequel or Hans son. He'd do a fantastic job, and I think could mix in a Star Wars tone, with a Spielberg Indiana jones adventure slllll.

The common movie goer wasn't familiar with Iron Man until RDJ brought Tony Stark to life. Edgar (and hopefully Paul Rudd) will do the same for Hank Pym.

He's a talented, talented director and Marvel totally made the right move by giving him Ant-Man. Their choices for directors have been very interesting and mostly paid off. Jon Favreau with Iron Man, Joe Johnston with Captain America, Kenneth Branagh with Thor, and yes, even Shane Black with Iron Man 3. Looking forward to it!

I am so damn intrigued by this film, I cannot wait for casting news then the trailer. Very curious who the villain(s) will be also. I really don't know the character that well, other than from "Earths Mightiest" cartoon.

...Scott Lang?

I know we don't know for sure, but aren't signs pointing to Scott Lang and not Hank Pym? I have no opinion, as I'm not too familiar with (or partial to) either.

Hank Pym will invent the Ant Man costume and Scott Lang will steal it. That was Wright's original pitch to Marvel. Marvel actually was hoping he would take on one of their better known characters but Wright had an idea that he wanted to pitch to Marvel and it looks as though Marvel finally agreed after seeing the test footage. It will rock.

I am not real familiar with this character but I have enjoyed Edgar Wright's work up to this point and I am very interested to see what it is like on the big screen. The test footage from Comic Con was pretty cool. I just want them to tell us who will be playing Hank Pym.
