Edward Norton releases a statement on facebook regarding his dismissal as the Hulk

Jul. 12, 2010by: Niki Stephens

Most of you are aware of the drama that's been going on between Marvel and Edward Norton this weekend.

It became a "representation said, the studio said" argument. Before it went any further, Norton finally decided to speak on his own behalf.

He took to his Facebook Fan Page to say this (click to enlarge):

Norton handles the situation rather gracious and respectfully. It makes me feel like he really wanted to make it work, but for whatever reason (money, etc) it's not possible. While I wasn't a huge fan of Eric Bana's Banner, I did take to Norton in the role. In my opinion, he balanced everything that the Hulk/Bruce Banner embodied. But now we'll have to get used to someone else in role.

Cue the "The Lonely Man theme"...

Extra Tidbit: So...how about that Joaquin Phoenix?

Yeah its sad that Norton is not coming back and I am disappointed. Even with that said I am more disappointed in Norton than anyone or anything else. The only reason I could see not coming back is if there is a scheduling conflict. If you love the role enough and care what the fans think, than the money should not be an issue. Yeah you need to make a living, but lets face it dude, you already make more than 90% of the people in the world. How much do you really fucking need? In the long run its

Shoot me now...

This is the official end of all things good about Hollywood super hero movies. First new X-MEN and Spider-Man re-boots, then Chris Evans for some reason as Capt and someone who doesn't have the "greek god" physique playing our fav Norse god, now this!!! Whats next? Robert Downey no longer Iron Man? Miley Cyrus as Scarlet Witch? God Help us all...

Unless this is all part of a big psych out so they make a big 'suprise' for comic con...now thatd be kinda cool - Norton was awesome as Banner - much better than Eric Bana - so we will see...Joaquin? I like the guy...but I dont see him as Hulk

I only cared about The Incredible Hulk because he was in it. :-( He's such a classy actor. I'm very sorry to see him booted from the role.

Classy by Norton. In the long run, he will come out on top. I really want to hear what Joss has to say more than what marvel has to say.

why can't hollywood ever get it right? finally a truely awesome hulk film was made and the thought of norton joining in with the other actors who've made this avengers thing possible was truely amazing. now we have to get used to another actor. will the hulk look the same? hope they don't change that because that was the best the hulk has looked thus far.

"It makes me feel like he really wanted to make it work"

if he REALLY wanted to be in the movie that much, he could have taken a pay cut. its not like he needs the money or anything. they should recast. LeBron as Bruce Banner (we know he's willing to take a pay cut)!

The worst thing about all this is knowing that we were so very close to seeing Norton reprise his role as Bruce Banner again, and it all just turned sour so quickly. Man, I would've loved to see Norton return as The Hulk.

Wow, I'm really glad to see actors respond to fans' enthusiasm and appreciation in them like what Norton did here. That is totally cool. But yeah, too bad that he couldn't be Bruce Banner in Avengers movie. I just hope that they gonna keep Norton's Banner in Avengers sequel but that is very least likely now. Hope the new Banner will be as good as Norton was.

Minority

I'm with filmguy450 on this one, Ang Lee's Hulk was in my opinion, a far better adaptation of comic book to movie, than "The Incredible Hulk", which had poor cgi effects that looked like a video game to me.
But anyway i liked both Bana and Norton, as far as replacements go, how about Adrien Brody ???

i'm still not happy,

but i'm really glad that that norton was so classy about it. it would have been really easy (and understandable) if he was just a huge dick about it. i probably wouldve been if it were me. i just hope marvel picks a good replacement.

Norton took this in stride, which is supremely cool.

I am in the minority here, in that I thought Ang Lee's "The Hulk" was genius and amazing, and "The Incredible Hulk" was fun and all, that's where it ended with me.

As for whom they get to replace Norton, I'm not really sure who should or can do it.

It's still shitty that he won't be reprising Banner/The Hulk in The Avengers or in a The Incredible Hulk sequel, but Norton writing this statement makes feel a bit better abou the whole situation. This statement proves that Norton is a very classy guy and really does care about his work. The Avengers won't be the same without him, but at least I can go back and watch The Incredible Hulk as many times as I want.

I don't like Shady studios and this rubs me the wrong way. They should just completely recast the avengers. Whats the point now? The double wife beaters is probably sweat by the way.

Double wifebeaters

Is he wearing an undershirt under his undershirt in this picture? I've seen this shot plenty of times before, but I never noticed that there appears to be a shirt with a lower neckline under his shirt.

That's weird..

Oh yeah, and Norton's response seems pretty classy. It doesn't provide any information, but it's not spiteful or angry or anything like that. It's very professional, and pretty much what he should've said.

Of COURSE Norton's going to release a statement like this. Whether or not scuffling actually occurred in prep for Avengers, the dude just got a major jab about his own professionalism. Now he could either sit back and let his agent keep firing back, or he can attempt to save face for the future of his career. He took the latter, obviously, and just happens to have a bit of support in the fan community.

Yeah, it's a nice little statement, but all this "stand-up guy" and "class act" shit is

Kudos Ed

Really dissapointed in Marvel, they should bend over backwards to get him to reprise the role imo whatever it takes. We pay shit loads to see their movies time and time again, and it seems like they just give up so easily. WTF was the point in getting a great actor to do one movie which was set up for him to appear in more, and then give him the cold shoulder. Now they just wanna fob off an unknown on us and pretty much start the character (for us) from scratch.

This is a shit situation...

... but one that I'm sure many saw coming. I don't know. On the one hand, how do you top Edward Norton? On the other hand, he didn't exactly do anything with Banner that any other (quality) actor couldn't bring to the table. I just think this is really sad as far as continuity is concerned.

Nice

A classy response from Norton. Sucks that Marvel won't open their wallets, but hey, look at that Order of the Phoenix business recently- the 9th highest grossing film of all time still lost around $160m. Business ain't great.

I didn't NOT like him. He was far from anything extraordinary, though. I get people are pissed about continuity, which is I guess legit, but was his performance that good? Was the character even that good?

Makes you think about the outcry if this had happened to RDJ/Tony Stark -- AKA casting worth fighting for.

To be honest, I am one of the 12 people out there that thinks Eric Bana's HULK was better than Ed Nortons'. That being said, however, I do think Ed Norton did a fine job, and think it will be weird not having him reprise his role. I'm not too sure how this Avengers will plan out, but if the lead actors start to drop out, I don't think it will fly.

Personally, I don't think taking different heroes from their own unique world and colliding them into one generalized one will work too well.

Bad Call On Marvel's Part

Not bringing Norton back as Bruce Banner undermines all that Marvel has been trying to do to build a Marvel Movie Universe. I wonder what other damaging concessions they are willing to make. Be afraid boys and girls. Decisions like this one are why Hollywood always destroys their comic book properties. The fact that Marvel did not realize the importance of keeping Norton after losing Bana proves they are going down the same damn path Warner Bros. notoriously blazed with their initial Batman

It's about the character not the actors. When they recast James Rhodes in Iron Man nobody cared... yes he was a small-ish character, but so would the Hulk in the Avengers (seeing as how it is an ensemble piece). So it doesn't undermine anything.

Melodrama aside, I do, however, agree that it makes you wonder about other concessions.
