Elf: the Broadway musical?

06.12.2010

Can an oversized Santa's helper succeed where a superhero like Spider-Man has (so far) failed?

While the big-budget Spider-Man Broadway muscial has continually crumbled, Will Ferrell's Christmas fave ELF will dance and sing and jingle all the way through the holidays. A stage musical is currently in the works, adapting director Jon Favreau's whimsical tale of naive human "elf" Buddy, who ventures from the North Pole to the Big Apple on a quest to meet his real parents.

Thomas Meehan, a Tony Award winner for ANNIE, THE PRODUCERS and HAIRSPRAY, is co-writing the show's book. The music and lyrics is being provided by the team who worked on the Broadway adaptation of THE WEDDING SINGER, which I didn't even realize had also been a stage musical.

The show will (obviously) run from Thanksgiving through New Year's, a lucrative time for Broadway thanks to the tourists flocking to New York for shopping.

Extra Tidbit: Maybe a musical version of Favreau's IRON MAN next?

Not 100% sure how I feel about this. While it'd be nice to see something hit Broadway that's not a revival (although, at least revival's are usually safe...), and while I love "Elf," I feel this would run too close to "Shrek- the musical" which is not my kind of Broadway. Seems like they'd make it very child and family-centric.
Broadway producers just need to hurry up and revive "Sweeney Todd" with Bernadette Peters.

I love Elf, and I hate Broadway (never had any interest in any show), but somehow, this could be a very interesting idea and the first Broadway show I'd see, if it keeps the great charm (and comedy) of the movie.

How can you say you hate Broadway shows if you have never seen one?... They are just as artistic as any film you talk about on here.

thy could combine 'walking with dinosaurs' and jurassic park into an onstage musical, insted of blood they can spray the audence with red streamers and confetti.

Why not create their own... oh I give up.
