Ellen DeGeneres to host the 86th Academy Awards!

Aug. 2, 2013by: Paul Shirey

After what seemed to be a not so warm and fuzzy reception to his schtick as host of the last Oscars ceremony, Seth MacFarlane is most definitely out and Ellen DeGeneres is back in as host of the 86th Academy Awards. The FINDING DORY actress has hosted the Hollywood ceremony once before and will take another crack at it on Sunday, March 2, 2014. Now, if we could just get some movies released that are worth giving a golden statue to we'll be all set!

Here's the official hubbub:

"We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars," said Zadan and Meron. "As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are."

"I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say - the third time's the charm," said DeGeneres.

"I agreed with Craig and Neil immediately that Ellen is the ideal host for this year's show," said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Academy President. "We're looking forward to an entertaining, engaging and fun show."

"Ellen is talented, wonderfully spontaneous, and knows how to entertain a worldwide audience," said Dawn Hudson, Academy CEO. "She's a big fan of the Oscars; we're huge fans of hers. It's a perfect match."

"It is an honor to welcome back Ellen DeGeneres as the host of the biggest entertainment celebration of the year," said Paul Lee, president, ABC Entertainment Group. "She is the consummate entertainer, equally beloved by her peers in the industry, movie fans and television viewers. We very much look forward to having her back on ABC for Oscar Sunday."

DeGeneres hosted the 79th Academy Awards in 2007, for which she received a Primetime Emmy nomination for "Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program."

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

So, what do you think? Is Ellen a solid choice for the next host? If not her, then who? Let's hear it!

Say, how come Jim Carrey never hosted the Oscars? I mean not that I want him to, I just thought that he's one of the most obvious choices for an Oscar host that has never been chosen for some reason.

Smeh. At this point I'm mostly numb to this kind of news. As much as I love the Oscars, ultimately the host doesn't matter. It's one night, and most people only pay attention to see if whoever is hosting will fuck it up. It's the art in film people should care about and celebrate, as we will still have that long after the awards are given out and everyone goes home.

She didn't do a bad job the first time around and I have become an Ellen fan from watching her talk show. She does have a slightly rambly signature comedy style, but I think it will come off better than Seth MacFarlane's "I'm funnier than thou, I'm being offensive but I'm actually not" shtick. MacFarlane was not a terrible host, but the ceremony on the whole seemed really...awkward, and it wasn't just him. So I hope Ellen makes it a more amiable affair, which is her speciality after all.

I love it! Seth McFarlane was... well, though funny in some parts I just feel like he's trying too hard to be the American Ricky Gervais. In which he failed miserably.

Ellen, I just adore Ellen.

She's funny and will do a great job. The only thing that I dislike about the Oscars is that it runs about two hours too long every year.

Safe Choice

I am not a fan of her comedy but Ellen has legions of fans and she will not be "mean spirited" or offensive. This is a safe choice and one that doesn't interest me in the least. I enjoy hosts that push the envelope a little like Chris Rock or Ricky Gervais but the greatest host ever would be the hilarious Louis CK.

Louis CK could have hosted any midnight talkshow and kills it, but I'm glad he doesn't. I prefer him loose and wild.

I'd like to see Kevin Spacey do this thing - I think he'd be great, especially when you consider how awesome he is at impersonations. [link]

She did one of the best jobs in recent history (not that it was hard to top Franco/Hathaway and the last go round of Billy Crystal), but it's still a lazy choice. I personally feel a duo hosting would be better. I'd love to see Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart host together (I didn't love Stewart by himself when he hosted), as I feel their chemistry and humour would work perfectly.

No reason to watch this thing now. At least you had the possibility of a train wreck as a reason, now it's just a snoozefest.

As long as she doesn't break out in dance and forces her audience to join, like she does to toe-curling effect in her talkshow, I think she might do a good job.
Although following up James Franco's zombie approach isn't exactly hard.

Okay, I didn't hate Ellen's hosting gig before. And this not being her first time, she's probably less likely to be trying to impress people. But I pretty much hated what Craig Zadan and Neil Meron did the last time (as much shit as some people gave Seth McFarlane, I felt like he was doing the best with the show he'd been given, not that I particularly want him back), so color me disappointed that they are still doing this.

NOOOO!!!!!!

GUILTY!....oh wait that for something else. NO!!! I don't mind her talk show but she was the worst Oscar host ever. She wasn't funny at all and it seemed everyone was bored with her up on stage. It's bad when you say you'd rather have James Franco back instead if her. They should have gotten Hugh Jackman or somebody new.

I don't get her appeal. She's not funny and from what I heard is a nightmare to work with.

That's an awesome dream pair but will likely NEVER happen! They have everything it takes to make an amazing, memorable show...something Ellen is incapable of accomplishing.
