Emotionally charged first trailer for 12 Years A Slave, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, and Brad Pitt

Jul. 15, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Based on the memoir by Soloman Northup, Steve McQueen's adaptation of 12 YEARS A SLAVE has debuted an emotionally-charged trailer that highlights the plight of Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who was born a free man and pushed into slavery illegally for 12 years. Directed by Steve McQueen (SHAME) and adapted by John Ridley (U TURN), the film has an oustanding roster of co-stars, including Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, and Alfre Woodard. Beautifully shot and with powerful performances just from the trailer alone, this has Oscar contender written all over it.

Take a look:

Of course, having Hans Zimmer's score from THE THIN RED LINE doesn't hurt to help sell your movie either, so this trailer greatly benefits from being put together with an eye towards striking those emotional chords. It worked for me, that's for sure. You couldn't ask for a better cast and filmmaking team for this material and I have no doubt this will be a powerful, if not very difficult, film to watch.

12 YEARS A SLAVE is set to debut on October 18, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: What is Benedict Cumberbatch NOT in?

Can he 'Van Sant' this?

This material wouldn't suffer from a little conventional storytelling...In the same way Gus Van Sant let go of his signature stroke for Milk/Will Hunting, I hope McQueen can do the same. His background is in fine art, hence the slow frame. I love me some Shame and Hunger...but the folks at home can't hang with that....can he do it!?!?! Hope so.

Finally!

It brings tears to my eyes that they're making this movie. Having grew up in detroit and learning about all aspects of American History-(I refuse to call it BLACK HISTORY, because black history is American History and i'm an American) during slave days in the 1800's Soloman's story is probably one of the best real life thrilling stories this country can offer. Brad Pitt is perfectly cast.....i just can't wait to watch this movie.

I would also like to see movies on white german slaves during

I would also like to see movies on white german slaves during the late 1700's through the late 1800's in this country. They had it real bad.

Wow

I had no idea this was taking place after slavery was abolished. That fact alone puts such a twist on this that i am quite intrigued.

I don't remember if it was Serenity or Redbelt when I first saw Chiwetel Ejiofor..but he was great in both - how is not in more movies...or do I just watch the wrong kind?

Bejollocks! I have seen Children of Men (great movie). Totally forgot he was in that...but have not forgot he was in 2012. What does that mean? What does that mean? :o)

Great Trailer

That poster is striking too, love that they went with white instead of black for the background—it gives it an edge of surrealism

Definitely looks like a winner.
So good to see Alfre Woodard in this. She deserves better roles than she's been getting lately.

If it's in any way as edgy as Hunger or Shame (which it can be) I don't see this being nominated. Steven McQueen is too much for the Academy.

Happy to see Chiwetel Ejiofor getting more lead roles. Remember my introduction to him being SERENITY, he's an awesome actor.

too bad it was in Serenity, as that might be the worst movie and performance he has ever given. But he is very talented.

This looks incredible. Hunger and Shame are both great films and I expect no less from this film either.

Can't wait.

Holy shit

I'm in.
Extra tidbit: All this talk about Idris Elba being Black Panther, we tend to forget about Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Just wow. Looks visually and emotionally stunning. Also for a second I did not recognize Brad Pitt: that does not happen often with Pitt.
