Epic trailer for Disney's India produced animated film Arjun: The Warrior Prince cuts off heads!

May. 4, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Recently, Disney bought a controlling interest in the Indian movie studio UTV, which had begun work on the animated epic ARJUN: THE WARRIOR PRINCE.  The film is now complete and will premiere in India this month.

The story is "based on the Indian Epic, the Mahabharat, which chronicles the heroic journey of a young prince from the days of his youthful innocence to his emergence as a valiant hero who single handedly took on an entire army in the battle for justice and peace.  It begins with Arjun as a nine-year-old boy and follows him till he grows into the warrior that the world knows him as. It explores his life with his brothers in Hastinapur, his training and education and his ultimate discovery of the warrior within himself."

Watch Disney get violent:

What intrigues me is the rather violent shit going on in the trailer, which is pretty bad ass if you ask me.  Of course, I'm not an eight year old who will cry in his popcorn at the sight of a man getting his head loped off, so that doesn't say much.  I'm curious what the reaction will be once this is released in the U.S.  It's very reminiscent of JOHN CARTER in that you have a shirtless man jumping all over the place and cutting all manner of motherf*ckers down with a sword.

The animation is kind of odd, but in a cool way.  I'm sure for some it won't be up to snuff, but I think it's different enough without being distracting.  Either way, it's a cool-looking blend of CG and hand-drawn elements, which make for a good show of disembowling, riding on horses, shooting arrows, and looking bad ass while silhouetted in fire.

No word on a U.S. release for ARJUN: THE WARRIOR PRINCE, but expect it to roll in sometime after its premiere in India on May 25, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: Do you prefer hand-drawn animation, CG animation, or a combination of the two? I'm really indifferent as long as it fits the film.

Nice...but...

Looks cool, and I like that Disney is co-producing a film with another country, especially a film that is about THAT country and their history (I'm assuming it's their history, I don't know, which is why it's a good thing).

However, I have a feeling that the violence will be edited out if they plan to release it under the Disney banner here in the US. Otherwise, I guess they could use Touchstone and leave it as-is, but it will never make as much money that way. We'll see I guess...

Extra TB: Traditional cell animation. Love it. Go back and watch Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray, it will blow your mind. Actually, watch any old Disney animated film on Blu-ray, looks and feels much more real than the stale CG animated films of today.

That violence was so quick...

That I didn't even notice it until you show the caps from the film. Thats bad ass. To bad it won't be good here in America where everybody fuckin overlooks everything. Oh no violence now my kid is goin to lop off headssssss. Fuck off. Movies don't do shit to people it's the way you raise your kids. Be home for them once in a while.. SOrry I am goin on a rant. And I prob will get a lot of thumbs down. But seriously it's annoying when people here place blame on TV and movies and books when it's

Awesome, with reservations

This movie looks great. I dig the animation, the style, the music, it all looks very cool. I am not crazy about the idea of Disney doing an American dub for the voices only because I doubt they will try to find Indian or even any Central Asian actors to do the parts. For further evidence please direct your attention to Prince of PERSIA starring Jake Gyllenhaal. *Shudder*

Thought I might add that they did offer actor hrithik roshan the part for prince of persia first but he turned it down.

I guess Indian kids can handle their violence better? I for one applaud Disney not only on making a big, epic film outside the US, but for also taking a chance and making it as violent and adult as this. Of course, Disney can also afford to do this, so I guess it's not a big surprise.

This looks like the Disney movie I've been waiting my whole life for. A traditional Disney movie willing to take big steps outside of their normal comfort zone. I never really hopped on the anime bandwagon that tried to fill that void, but preteen me is really stoked for a US release of this. It may be the most culturally inoffensive Disney movie to date as it is made by Indians. But I won't jump to conclusions yet.

I don't really have a preference with animation styles, as long as the story

I don't really have a preference with animation styles, as long as the story is at least decent and the animation quality isn't half-assed.

I really like the look of this film; it kind of reminds me of Dreamworks' the Prince of Egypt. It's good that Disney's name is attached to this as it will get it wider recognition outside of India. I'm also hoping for an all-star Hollywood cast voice dub, like some anime films receive.
