Episode VIII will be bigger & darker than The Force Awakens says John Boyega

John Boyega Star Wars: Episode VIII Rian Johnson

Much like the "creative differences" line that studios continually drop when someone leaves a project, referring to a sequel as "bigger and darker" is as common as the cold. John Boyega is in the middle of shooting Rian Johnson's STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII, but the young actor was able to take some time out and show up at Cannes to receive this year’s Chopard Trophy, which was also presented to Bel Powley (DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL). Variety caught up with Boyega at Cannes and was able to ask him a few questions about the upcoming film.

It’s a different take, darker, bigger. Someone will say: “How do you get bigger than ‘Force Awakens?'” But it’s crazy.

Bigger and darker is fine, so long as the fun of STAR WARS isn't left behind. Variety also questioned Boyega on the developing romance between Finn and Rey (Daisy Ridley) and how that romance might evolve in the next installment. However, John Boyega responded that neither Daisy nor himself played up the romance aspect in THE FORCE AWAKENS and that it may not go the way people suspect it will.

Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII is due to hit theaters on December 15, 2017.

I've heard more people talking about the potential Finn / Poe Dameron romance than the Finn / Rey romance, to be fair. If Finn shows up with a cybernetic spine implant in Episode VII it could be interesting.

Talking up the movie at every opportunity is a big part of his job - it's what they call "promotion." That's why Disney pays him "a big check."

fifaa

My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out.

Maybe Fynn and Poe will hook up. U think Disney has the balls for that?

I understand why TFA copies ANH so much. Really, it was the only chance they had at pleasing the old fans, erasing the taste of the prequels, and getting new fans. It was a deliberate strategy, and maybe they pulled too much from ANH, but I think they got the results and success they were aiming for.

I don't think they will copy the structures of episode 5 and 6 for the next 2 films - at least I hope not.

I don't think they will copy the structures of episode 5 and 6 for the next 2 films - at least I hope not. They've reminded and reintroduced everyone to the world, now it's time to do their own thing. But like Empire, it's obvious #8 would be a darker sequel. I assume we will learn the dark story of why Luke disappeared, how Ben became Kylo, the slaughtered of Luke's students, and some background for Rey/Finn. And out of the 3 new directors, Johnson easily has the darkest filmography. And I think the 3rd will be a happier kid friendly ewok kinda film, which Colin seems to fit.

Side note, I think kylo will end up being the good guy, and maybe main character of the trilogy. Idk if Rey will turn dark, but it wouldn't totally surprise me

Why should Kylo and Rey switch sides? Makes no sense to me.

Bealzf, I've been pushing that theory ever since FA came out. Not only would it be much more interesting than "Rey learns to be a Jedi....Rey fights Snoke.....Good guys win!", but it makes more sense in the world they have created. Kylo is already weaker than Rey, so an extra few months of training isn't going to make him a match for her when she's worked with Luke for the same amount of time. Also, they've repeatedly pointed out how Kylo has battles with staying on the Dark Side, and Solo

It seems like the only logical way for the franchise to proceed, and it's a way to distance this trilogy from the original (especially since FA has gotten so much hate over the similarities to Ep IV).

Joe, think of it this way.....why did Rey's parents drop her off on that planet? Was it because someone foresaw her going bad and becoming unbeatable?

While we're talking about pushing the envelope, maybe Disney can try to shove another hot-button issue down our throats and have 'alternative' stormtroopers wonder which bathroom they are supposed to use.

@Des1: Ok, you are right it would be more interesting that way. However I don't see Kylo redeem himself for killing Han by any other way than his own death. Kylo is already not very popular with the fans, he wouldn't work as hero. Rey on the other hand...and for the reason she was dropped; I guess her parents wanted to save her from Kylo or his master.

I like the fan theory that Ren is good. Talking to Vaders helmet to gain strength to do the bad things he has to do to take down the First Order and Snoke, the strength to kill his own father to prove himself to Snoke to keep up his dark side persona. It would be curious to see Ren eventually turn out the good guy doing bad things for the bigger picture of defeating Snoke. I don't like the idea or Rey turning evil though. We finally have a good Jedi female and to turn her into the villain
