Evans on FF reboot

Sep. 14, 2009by: Jenna Busch

I still can't believe they're doing another FANTASTIC FOUR movie. It's like the dueling HULK's. Give it a few more years...that's all I'm saying. I got a chance to ask Chris Evans about his feelings on the subject. He was gracious, of course, but I'm going to say it for him. Don't do it. Too soon! Anyway, here's what he said about whether or not he's going to be involved.

“I don't think I'm going to be involved with it. I'd imagine the reboot, it would be a reboot. I think they're going to start from scratch. And that's the way those movies...it seems like sometimes they happen quicker than others, you know. BATMAN, there was a big chunk of time, but the new BATMAN movies are fantastic. SUPERMAN, you know, THE INCREDIBLE HULK -- sometimes there's a big gap and sometimes there's a small gap. If there's room to reinvent a franchise in a different tone and they can make a good film out of it, then so be it. I have nothing negative to say about it.”

He was asked if it would be weird to watch someone else play the role. He said, “Well, of course. But that's, you know, I've done plays and then I'll go see someone else do the same play and be like, 'I did it differently.' Of course -- let's not confuse weird with bad or weird with negative. Weird is in no way -- in no way would I -- I welcome the new franchise; I hope it's fantastic. I like good movies. I'm sure Michael Keaton felt the same way. I'm sure Christopher Reeves felt the same way. If it's a great movie, let's make it, let's get it out there. There aren't enough of them.”

Yeah, but come on. There aren't enough stories out there? I mean, the Ang Lee HULK was awful. (It looked like someone filmed a movie and drew in the Hulk with a green crayon.) The Louis Leterrier HULK was necessary to scrub the earlier film out of my consciousness. But THE FANTASTIC FOUR was great! Leave it alone. What, there aren't enough Marvel characters to choose from? They're doing ANT-MAN for Pete's sake.

Evans.

Just give us Galactus and a bad ass Dr. Doom, It's sad that Evans won't return as Torch but they better be more careful with their casting this time around, EVANS was the only one who carried the films allong, at least he's got his PUSH franchise he could continue.

i just wanted to say the FF films weren't as bad as everyone says. They are the perfect popcorn movies: Cool effects, hot girls, and humor. I'll take them over the first hulk and daredevil any day.

Ant Man...

...won't see the light of day. And if it does, it woin't see any of my money. You can't make a cool movie out of a stupid character.

I am pretty sure.....

That Christopher Reeve was dead when the Supes got rebooted! He died on 10 October 2004, and the movie came out in 2006. Now if he was talking about the Tv series that came out ( I think there have been 3) well that makes a little more since.

I question

the credibility of some of the writers for JoBlo.com sometimes. I mean, anyone can tell you the FF films sucked. Personally, I am a DC fan and can tell you the FF films are absolute shit.

Screw that

Yeah. take that FF quip back. Not a faithful treatment at all...not to mention it was a total camp fest. In regards to Rise of Silver Surfer, let's just forget that ever happened...

A good FF film EVENTUALLY needs to happen, because there's so much material for a great sci-fi- themed teamup flick, but I agree that Marvel should wait. I DID find it refreshing that Evans wasn't a dick about this news, though

I do hope you were joking about F4 being great. It was one of the biggest pieces of garbage I've ever seen. This franchise needs a reboot badly, but I think it's too soon to do it. They should give us an X-Factor or X-Force movie already!

A bad Ang Lee movie will always be better than the best Tim Story movie

When I read interviews of any actors of the FF films, I always had the feeling, reading between the lines, that they were all disappointed by the films and that they were just being good soldiers when they defended them.

Evans has the right attitude by being modest.

I think Ang Lee's Hulk was great, not for everyone though, but The Fantastic Four were awful, almost no redeeming quality, it felt like a bad sitcom that would have been canceled after the first episode.

Chris Evans was the only good part about the FF movies. He played his part perfectly. As for any more... I don't care to see a F4 movie ever again.

The FF movies SUCKED.

They were stupid as hell. There's no way around it. Evans and Chiklis were the ONLY good things about them.

Fail

Sorry, I tried, but I can't let this go. If you thought the FF movie was great then you have no business offering your opinion on a movie website. It was a failure on all accounts. End of story.

I have a BAD feeling about this...

Geez ANOTHER REBOOT? C'mon now enough with this crap already, the whole point is to get the initial backstory out of the way so we can start seeing some kickass representations of our favorite throw downs. Lets see some freakin super skull battles. The current cast is fine - not great but I can live with them. We've gotten past that part don't make us go through the angst of recasting again.
You're in danger of burning out the franchise and most people are about topped out on super here movies

You thought THE FANTASTIC FOUR was great?

I actually welcome this reboot no matter how soon it may be since the last film, simply because I think it can be done so much better. The only thing they actually got right in the first two were the casting of Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis (even though he wasn't used effectively at all), and the Silver Surfer. Otherwise everything else was pretty dreadful. Julian McMahon as Dr. Doom? I still can't wrap my head around that one.

Having said, the property still belongs to Fox - so what will

Having said, the property still belongs to Fox - so what will most likely happen is that instead of Tim Story we'll get Andy Fickman or the like, who'll have no problem bowing to each and every quality-destroying demand required by the studio.

I also thought the Hulk looked terrific in Ang Lee's version (I just hated the intellectual and psychological digressions from what should have been pure action).

Jenna, we were getting along so well until that last paragraph. :)

ERM, NO. THE FF MOVIE WAS NOT GREAT...

I'm all for a reboot if they do it right this time. Follow the blueprint set by the comics and a FF movie could be pretty awesome. For starters, make The Thing massive and look like stone and not rubber, make Sue Storm a blonde caucasian woman and do Dr Doom right.
