Ewan McGregor is still down for one or two Obi-Wan Kenobi movies

10.12.2016

So long as the STAR WARS movies keep bringing in the big bucks, the franchise will keep going and going and going, which means that in addition to the main saga episodes, we're in for countless spin-off films. As the STAR WARS galaxy contains an enormous amount of characters and stories, there's plenty of material for Disney/Lucasfilm to mine for years to come, but Ewan McGregor is hoping (yet again) that at least one of those spin-off films will feature Obi-Wan Kenobi.

McGregor played the role in all three installments of the STAR WARS prequel trilogy and with almost two decades separating REVENGE OF THE SITH with A NEW HOPE, there's definitely room for Obi-Wan to have a few more adventures, unless he really did spend each and every day on Tatooine watching over a young Luke Skywalker. You've got to get out of the house once and while. Ewan McGregor has always seemed keen to reprise the role and while speaking with Premiere (via Den of Geek), the actor said that now that he's older, he's down for multiple Obi-Wan movies.

I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one. It would be fun to film that story now I’m older, I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them! I hope that they’re going to explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!

Wrapping your mouth around the cumbersome dialogue (I don't like sand) found throughout the prequel trilogy was no small feat, even for its accomplished cast, but Ewan McGregor was one of the few who was able to make it work, all while looking like he was having a good time with it. I can't think of many aspects of the prequel trilogy which I'd want to expand in more STAR WARS movies, but a spin-off (or two) featuring McGregor as Kenobi is definitely one I'd welcome. Here's hoping that it actually happens and we're not still posting "Ewan McGregor would love to play Obi-Wan again" articles ten years from now. It's probably safe to say that I'm not alone in this desire and Zaki Hasan of Zaki's Corner recently chatted with McGregor where he spoke for all of us by telling the actor that we'd love to see him return to the role.

Yeah, yeah, me too. I hope so too. I mean, I'd love to do it. I've said that – to the point that people are sort of thinking I'm pitching for work, but I would, I'd be very happy. There's no plans for it at the moment, but it'd be nice.

Speaking of spin-offs, don't forget to check out the brand-new poster for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY while we wait for the new trailer to drop tomorrow morning. The Gareth Edwards directed flick will hit theaters on December 16, 2016.

Extra Tidbit: Ewan McGregor had a incredibly brief voice cameo as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Star Wars comics being published by Marvel have one-off Obi Wan stories every now and then. They're pretty great stories too, self-contained without getting in the way of what's established in the saga. I think it would be great to have an Obi Wan film. With these anthology films exploring stories not related to the main saga, there could be so many stories to tell with Obi Wan, and it would be cool to have a Jedi-centric anthology film without getting into the whole area of the Empire

Great casting. While I don't think the prequels are as bad as most people say, he was one of the best things about them. A dirty, grungy version would be awesome. I'd be on board for more obi-wan.

I like him but I think everything we needed to know about "young" Kenobi has been told through the shit movies that have been the prequels. After that he hid on Tatooine. That should be it.

I think it would be fun to reveal in an Obi-Wan prequel that Obi-Wan, Anakin and Yoda actually came up with the decades long plan to overthrow Darth Sidious by setting up Anakin as a heel to get close to the Emperor, while Obi-Wan ensure that his kids would be prominent in the future war as Jedi and politician. Yoda may have been the one behind Sifo Dyas creating the clone army to undermine the nearly ineffective and complacent Jedi so that Luke could eventually reform it. They're working for

They're working for both sides to clear all Jedi and Sith influence and bring balance to The Force by way of starting over. Their methods were harsh but the ends are for the greater good. It's a crazy conspiracy story that would destroy a whole lot of what's considered Star Wars canon but heck, why not? For all we know that might have been George Lucas' intentions all along.

You could make a neat story about his time on Tatooine. In my mind, something similar to a western like A Fistful of Dollars. A group of Bounty Hunters causing trouble in Mos Eisley, Obi-wan has to confront them to protect the town. Unfortunately, I don't think Disney would do something like that.

I am kinda hoping we see Obi-Wan in Ep8 as a spirit guiding Luke and Rey.. As much as I tolerated the prequels for the fluff they are, Ewan was by far my favourite aspect of the trilogy. I'd be down for at least one Obi-Wan Kenobi story.

If he was going to appear in Ep. VIII, I doubt he would be wanting this quite so bad, honestly. Disney seems to want to have nothing whatsoever to do with the prequels, plus it was Alec Guinness as force ghost Obi Wan in the original trilogy. It wouldn't make much sense for him to show up as McGregor now. Definitely would like the solo film, though.

EP8 is still over a year away. There is always the possibility they may include spirit Obi-wan. Since Sir Alex has been gone a long time, recasting an old Ep8 Spirit with Ewan would work just fine

I'm up for it. It would be fun to see a now older Obi-Wan evade the Empire.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Liam's Qui-Gon as a spirit as well for Obi-wan. Afterall, Yoda was teaching him how to commune with him at the end of ROTS.
