Ewan McGregor plans to shoot the sequel to Trainspotting in 2016

In case you were wondering what the great Ewan McGregor has been up to, the man is now tearing it up on-stage in his first Broadway show, The Real Thing, acting alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal. He recently spoke with Details about the experience, but also brought up some interesting news regarding his views on Star Wars and the surprising fact that after turning down a TRAINSPOTTING sequel for so long, he is finally ready to take it on.

Regarding the odds of a TRAINSPOTTING sequel happening:

It looks like it might happen. The idea is that we shoot it in 2016, which would be 20 years after the original came out. And I'd be up for it. I wouldn't have been 10 years ago, but I am now.

How McGregor feels about THE PHANTOM MENACE:

I watched it once, at the premiere, so I'm not in a good position to judge. They had a tall order, the three films I did. The fans waited so long and wanted to feel like they did when they watched the first film, but they were grown-ups by that time. I don't mind the criticism. I've heard it to my face.

If he's ever done a film just for the money:

There have been films I've done where I've been very happy to have reached my last day on set, but not many. And I've never started a film with anything other than enthusiasm.

For many years, McGregor would refuse to take part in a TRAINSPOTTING sequel because he would always cite that film as his favorite. It's hard to argue, as while I feel some of Danny Boyle's (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, SUNSHINE) recent efforts have come close, he's never quite been able to capture that magic that he did with TRAINSPOTTING. I'm familiar with the sequel book Porno that was written by the original book's author Irvine Welsh, so I'd be curious to see if they stick with that story or craft something new. Looks like we have two years until we find out!
