Ewan McGregor wants to play Obi-wan Kenobi in a Star Wars Anthology movie

06.22.2015

While Ewan McGregor has previously said that no one has reached out to him about reprising the role of Obi-wan Kenobi in one of the STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY films, the Scottish actor wants to be clear that he would not say no to such a project. At the recent Edinburgh Film Festival, McGregor was asked about the upcoming STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. He said he was happy to be a part of the STAR WARS legacy and feels J.J. Abrams and company have "nailed it" with the upcoming seventh film.

When asked about a potential stand-alone film focused on Obi-wan, McGregor had this to say.

"I'd be happy to do the story from episodes three where I finish up and Alec Guinness [who played the older Kenobi in the original Star Wars movies] starts."

Many have assumed that Kenobi's years between Episode III and IV was spent monitoring the growth of Luke Skywalker. A hermit living alone on Tatooine, there could have been countless adventures yet unexplored in the STAR WARS mythos. With the extended universe now reset, they could easily make a new film with McGregor. Sir Alec Guinness was 63 when he starred in the original STAR WARS which puts McGregor still two decades shy, giving a lot of creative storytelling space.

The STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY series has so far only formally announced STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE from director Gareth Edwards. With several more in development to potentially focus on everyone from Han Solo to Boba Fett and even Yoda, there is no reason we couldn't see an Obi-wan Kenobi movie. The only issue would be in finding a story worth telling.

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE opens December 16, 2016.

Extra Tidbit: McGregor also said he is interested in making the TRAINSPOTTING sequel next year. He has met with Danny Boyle but there is still no screenplay.

Sorry, but McGregors Obi Wan was a character without any characteristics. Like most other characters of the prequels Obi Wan was totally 2 dimensional and boring.

I would be up for something

While watching the prequels, I found myself ONLY interested during scenes with Ewan. He killed it, while the series around him was being killed.
If he comes back for something interesting story-wise, I'm more than willing to give it a chance.

Interesting Idea...

It's established, as GertFroebe mentioned, that Obi-Wan is really supposed to be locked down to watching over Luke so I think it would be best to craft a story that keeps him on Tatooine. My idea is that they pull inspiration from the Yojimbo/Sanjuro Kurosawa films (eventually Fistful of Dollars etc.). Have the Lars' family farm caught up in the middle of a gang territory dispute between some Sand People and some other more advanced gangsters from Mos Eisely. Have Obi-Wan mozy into the middle

Have the Lars' family farm caught up in the middle of a gang territory dispute between some Sand People and some other more advanced gangsters from Mos Eisely. Have Obi-Wan mozy into the middle of it all and tear it apart from the inside. It could be a samurai/western style film that pulls already from the strong Kurosawa inspiration of the original films and would be a cool nod to Lucas' interest in having Toshiro Mifune play Obi-Wan early on. In that vein perhaps they can take it a step further and bring in Darth Maul with the robotic legs as told in the comics and situate him in as the gun totting Tatsuya Nakadai character Unosuke from Yojimbo. Two outsiders with a grudge, manipulating the local underworld to their own gain, with Obi-Wan's responsibility as guardian in the balance. Sign me up.

IDK, just an idea that popped in my mind and ran with it lol

He was great as Obi-wan, but I don't want a bunch of spin-off films of the established characters. Star Wars is a huge universe with many possibilities, give us something new. Rogue One is a step in the right direction.

I actually consider the prequels more about Obi-Wans story than Anakin. He's far more fleshed out than anyone in the prequels and yeah, I would be happy to see where it all fills in between EP3 and Ep4. I mean, his Jedi-ness would be toned down to avoid suspicion, but who knows. Maybe even get ghost Qui-Gon back.
Just have 2 hours of them drinking tea. Sure...why not!

He's supposed to hide on Tatooine and look after Luke from the distance.

Get Danny Boyle to direct it and we have a kickass anthology SW movie.

Agreed

Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the few bright spots of the prequel trilogy. I'd like to see him in the role again, this time in a better movie.

I'mn actually for this. He was one of the few good things about that trilogy and given a better writer and director, his performance could be phenomenal.

He was terrific in the role and was one of the only good, few parts about the prequel trilogy. So if they were to make a standalone film with him, I'd be interested.
