Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson Feb. 15, 2008

When it was first announced that Liev Schrieber had signed on to star in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, it was reported that Schrieber would be playing Stryker. Later we learned that Schrieber would in fact be starring as Sabretooth (awesome casting BTW) leaving a vacancy in the role of Young William Stryker that has yet to be filled. The go-to rumor was Michael C. Hall of "Dexter" fame but now we've got the exclusive scoop on who may actually be starring as Stryker. A source close to the production tells us that actor Danny Huston (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) has signed on to star as William Stryker in WOLVERINE and is already on location in New Zealand prepping for his part. Odd since I had heard that Hall also was in New Zealand but that could've just been rumors. Personally I think Huston is a better choice to play a younger version of Bryan Cox (if you're aiming for that kind of continuity). Now that filming is finally underway, expect more from the set including more casting and confirmation on which mutants will make an appearance (The Blob was in an earlier draft but I heard he's been given the heave-ho). Gavin Hood (RENDITION) is directing WOLVERINE based on a script by David Benioff. X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is set for release on May 1, 2009.

So far so good
In addition to The Proposition, one can view Danny in Constant gardener (one of his best) or The Aviator if you're uncertain about his acting chops. I can see him as a younger Brian Cox (if a little fitter). Have to say the casting (and directing) of this film are really coming together. BTW, who rewrote Wolverine before the strike?

Regarding some of the comments below:

Could someone please explain to me the fanboy obsession with Gerard Butler?

:-/

I mean, sure, he was fun in the goofily over-the-top "300"...but he was TERRIBLE as both Dracula and the Phantom; and his latest film, "P.S. I Love You," got lacerating reviews.

And as for Wolverine? I still hope they're staying with the comics' origin, and have abandoned that nonsense about young Wolvie fighting, erm, high school jocks...which doesn't sound like it's set in 1800s Canada.

terrestrial, please rent 'The Propostion' instead of 30 Days of Night to really see Huston's talents used properly

Danny Huston is an amazing actor!

I'm a moderate X-Men fan, but this casting made me giddy. The resemblance to Brian Cox is also striking (pun intended)

Cast
XMO:Wolverine is promising to be a star studded film, just like the previous three, good solid casting so far, I cant wait to see which new mutants they bring in.

Hall
Michael C. Hall would have been a great choice for Stryker. He had a stricking resemblence to the actor from X Men 1-3. Getting an experienced actor is good but age sure runs with time. right ?

wait wait... didnt tyler mane play sabretooth in the first film?... what's the continuity there? i never really read the comics and only watched some of the animated versions, but i fully realize wolverine's decreased aging but are we going to see a muuuuch younger sabretooth here, or is his aging slowed too? and if it is, why not bring back tyler mane? and if not, shouldnt he have been quite a...
