Exclusive: "Choke" out a clip from The Sweeney starring Ray Winstone, Damian Lewis, and Hayley Atwell

Mar. 1, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Today we have an exclusive clip from THE SWEENEY (see our review here), starring gravelly-voiced bad ass Ray Winstone, Damian Lewis (Homeland), Hayley Atwell (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER), and Ben Drew.  Based on the popular 1970s British crime show, the film is a hard-boiled cop drama that seems to fit someone of Winstone's capabilities quite well.  Winstone has got the look of a man you simply don't f*ck with.  His voice alone could stop traffic and he seems well-suited to lead an adaptation like this, playing the tough guy who doesn't play by the rules or let anything stand in his way.  That may be a cliche, but when it's Ray Winstone, it's still a powerful one.

In the clip, Winstone has a few choice words with one of his adversaries, which turns into a choke hold that would make Darth Vader proud. However, the coolest thing is Winstone giving JoBlo.com a personal shout out. Thanks, Ray!

Check it out:

Here's the synopsis:

Jack Reagan is a slobbish, old style cop whose unsubtle methods usually get results, to the annoyance of internal affairs officer Lewis, who would be even more annoyed if he knew that Reagan was having an affair with his young wife, policewoman Nancy. After Reagan disobeys orders and a shoot-out in central London following a bank hold-up ends in carnage he is stripped of office and briefly imprisoned. However, thanks to the loyalty of his young protege George Carter and a little string pulling from his superior, Frank Haskins Reagan, is released to bring down the villains in a gun battle at Gravesend marina, ensuring the continued existence of his department - the Sweeney.

I loved Winstone in BEOWULF and THE DEPARTED, so it's great to see him still out and about kicking the shit out of bad guys onscreen.  His voice and presence are always welcome.

THE SWEENEY hits theaters and VOD today, March 1, 2013.  Winstone will next be seen in Darren Arronofsky's NOAH on March 28, 2014.

Also, Hayley Atwell...just...Hayley Atwell...

Extra Tidbit: What's your favorite Ray Winstone role? It's The Departed for me.

Favorite Winstone for me is probably Captain Stanley from "The Proposition." That and Gal from "Sexy Beast."

Just watched it...

I really enjoyed this as I am a sucker for British cinema and for good reason. We would highly unlikely see something this gritty in the states. Also, killer cast and yes a shoot out scene reminiscent of Heat. One of my all time favorites and dare I say that scene pays a damn nice homage to it...

If you watched The Sweeney back in the 70s then you probably watched this movie from a nostalgia perspective. This made it do well in the UK, whether or not its a good film can be reflected in its imdb and rotten tomato ratings...lets see what the US think about it...
