Exclusive Cool Video: Oscar "Best Picture" Retrospective - 1984

100%

In this new series we take a look at the Oscar nominations of years past, examining the flicks that were nominated, as well as the pic we feel got snubbed among all the other candidates. Love 'em or hate 'em, the Oscars usually highlight the best films from each year (although there are plenty that get overlooked) and it's always fun to look back and see what was popular for any given year and to contemplate their legacy in retrospect. This time out we take a look at the 1984 Oscars, which had a fairly "dramatic" year with a snub for one of the most quoted and beloved flicks ever made.

Enjoy:

1984 nominees (for films released in 1983):

- TERMS OF ENDEARMENT
- THE DRESSER
- TENDER MERCIES
- THE RIGHT STUFF
- THE BIG CHILL

Winner: TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

Snub: SCARFACE

Great year

I was 20 that year and I don't think I saw Terms of Endearment or Scarface until a few years later in rentals (Love them both), but I fell in love with The Big Chill and The Right Stuff and that Big Chill soundtrack is incredible. Still have that LP.

Enjoyed this video!

I like this column, because it's nostalgic to my childhood. Not so much on the nominees that are listed in the articles; but remembering the other dozen plus movies that came out that year that were totally amazing... not to mention all the other shit I was into when I was 6 years old.

1983 was a good year, 1984 was even better...
