When you think of "epic" movies, you may immediately consider fantasy films like THE LORD OF THE RINGS or maybe even STAR WARS, HARRY POTTER, or THE MATRIX. But, epic does not solely have to be about those genres. Epic truly belongs to films with a sweeping scope and that could be from any number of genres like war, history, or even romance. The cinematic scale of a movie that crosses continents and generations could be deserving of the word epic.

With that in mind, here is a video compiling the ten most cinematic epics excluding those from the realm of fantasy. Some of these likely made your own list while others should have made it. If your favorite isn't here, let us know in the talk backs below, but hopefully this list will be a reminder of some forgotten classics and inspiration for some great movie marathons.

This would be more interesting if you defined "epic". These are all great films, but the list and order seem very random. To me, films like The Right Stuff or The Longest Day are true non-fantasy epics and deserve to be on any list of the best films of that kind.

Is this a list of epic films based on fight/action scenes? What about Titanic?

I agree with bigred760. Ben Hur should be placed in a better spot than 8.
These are some great films, but epic doesn't necessary apply to films with only big battle scenes.
What about Titanic???? The sinking of the ship alone beats Dances with Wolves.

You forgot another Sergio Leone epic

That is a great list, tho you missed another of Sergio Leone's epic, perhaps his best of all; 'Once Upon a Time in America'

Good list, but most in the wrong order. Ben-Hur at #8? Way too low.
