Exclusive Cool Video: Top 10 Car Chases of the Last 30 Years

03.12.2014

There can be endless debates about which films have had the best car chase sequences of all time. Last year, we even compiled such a list, but today we are bringing you a much different look at these scenes by narrowing the field to just the last three decades. You may think you can already predict which movies will make the cut, but you may need to think again.

With the special effects that movies can achieve these days, car chases are not quite the same as they were in the days of BULLIT or THE FRENCH CONNECTION. Today, cameras can be placed almost anywhere to capture angles and shots that were impossible in the sixties and seventies. But, this list isn't all CGI and FAST AND FURIOUS movies.

In honor of the release of NEED FOR SPEED, check out the extended Top 10 video below. Clocking in at 18 minutes, get ready to buckle yourself into your seat for one hell of a ride.

I'd put T2 at number 1, tt's the ultimate chase film.

Can I say the chase scene in Tomorrow Never Dies? The one in the parking lot

I love Brosnan's expression when the tires re-inflate. He's so happy it worked!

Nice list

Though my would be much different - I absolutely prefered the car chase in Fast Five than Furious Six, the one with the vault. A simple yet original addition to a car chase that made it completely original.

The Dark Knight car chase would also be on my list. Great tension and action setpieces - flipped trucks, destroyed batmobiles, a bike, a crashed helicopter.

The one from Batman Begins would be a nice addition as well.

I would also have the other car chase from T2 in the film.

You could have easily put half of Speed on the list, that movie got most of its thrills from driving in a bus.

And also Beyond Thunderdome? Seriously? The Road Warrior had way better car chases, it was definitely more tense.

One of the chases in the original Bourne trilogy would be on my list too. I don't know which one yet, they were all pretty spectacular.

RE: The Island

Is that the one where Michael Bay ripped off footage from another movie to use in that scene? I vaguely recall hearing something about that.

I've heard that Bay used some footage from The Island freeway chase in Transformers: Dark on the Moon where Bumblebee and Dino the red Ferrari were chased on the freeway by two black SUVs Decepticon.

Nice list! Kind of tough to do because there are so many great car chases. My #1 is definitely T2. When I saw that as a kid, I was scared shitless.

um..... why so serious?!

Where's the love for The Dark Knight tractor trailer chase? This was some balls to the walls nutty shit! The batmobile blocking an RPG? A helicopter going down? The semi flipping completely forward!? not to mention the tension provided by the acting, especially Ledger's insane Joker. Just the fact that he's laughing the whole time causing this mayhem adds to the entire chase experience! Where's the love for THAT scene...... shit, why so serious?

Glad you mentioned The Bourne Identity, that chase was crafted nearly without destruction. Good list. Jack Reacher was another great one because the absent of music was the greatest tone i got from it, making it super raw.

Swap out the 1st chase in T2 and replace it with the tanker chase at the end, add death proof's ending chase, take out one of the two Bay films and I would have been more agreeable with the list but opinions are what they are, makes me want to watch mad max so, thank you.

To answer the question of do these measure up to the classics like Bullitt and The French Connection...No. Those will always be the best. Sometimes, less is much more.

I really think The Island is Michael Bay's best work - a provocative sci-fi action with that great chase scene.
Bad Boys 2 chase scene is also great. Quantum of Solace has two great chase scenes - that chase scene at the beginning and the boat chase. Ronin chase is a given - Great scene. I would also add the original long chase from the original Gone in Sixty Seconds with the original Eleanor and the third act chase scene from Vanishing Point (my personal favorite).

I wouldnt put FF6 as my number 1, or top ten if I actually thought about it. But I do think many of the other films on here deserve to be on this list. The Terminator 2 chase scene did have my jaw drop the first time I saw it.

The chase with the Batmobile/Batpod, Harvey Dent in the armoured truck and the Joker from The Dark Knight comes to mind. The Terminator 2: Judgement Day scene is excellent, but I will also begrudgingly admit that the truck chase in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, with Arnie hanging off the boom arm, is pretty badass.

Well...

id have to put Ronin as number 1. the believable nature of the Ronin scene, down to the shit-his-pants look on DeNiro's face put it past the over-the-top impossibility of FnF6. Otherwise a good list, but I would give honorable mention to the car chase in the rain in We Are the Night and to the classics Bullitt and Vanishing Point.
