Exclusive Cool Video: Top 10 World War II Movies

02.05.2014

War, what is it good for? I can tell you that while I in no way advocate war in real life, I absolutely do on the big screen. Epic battle sequences, stirring drama, breathtaking cinematography; all are hallmarks of the classic war motion picture. The films both entertain but the genre also represents the old adage of learning from the past so as to not repeat in the future.

Of all wars, World War II seems to be the most common era to be envisioned on the big screen. This is likely due to cinema being as popular as ever during the 1940s during the battles, many of which included Hollywood celebrities at the time. The sheer evil of the Nazi regime also represents the perfect big screen villain that everyone wants to see toppled.

Here, we rank the ten best movies that take place during World War II. From small films to large, these movies each have something special that sets them apart from the countless other movies in the same genre. See if you agree with our choices.

Check out the list in the video below.

The bottom of the list i all wrong

The Thin Red Line had may well done set piece battles, but Malick was all over the place as he is with most of his films. It was hard to stay awake between battles. Inglorious Bastards was only tolerable because of the performance of the most evil character in the film. Where was Midway, , Tora, Tora, Tora, The sands of Iwo Jima, A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day, Playing Dirty, and the list goes on. I guess movies didn't start till after you were born.

I personally prefer The Pacific to BoB. I know this is akin to sacrilege but I thought it was more a more focused character driven story as a whole than BoB which changed the narrative perspective in almost every episode.

Band Of Brothers should have been #1

FAR FAR Superior to Saving Private Ryan in the story department. Not to mention that Band Of Brothers is a true story.

"Letters From Iwo Jima" is one of the greatest war films of all time!
What about "Schindler's List", it's about World War II despite not being on the front lines, it's about what was going on behind enemy lines? What qualified as a WWII film? Gun fighting films only, and not battling the holocaust? Is this only a gun fighting WWII movie list?
The Thin Red Line gets better over time, and is great looking on Criterion blu ray, should be higher than "Enemy At The Gates".
Also better than

Also better than "Enemy At The Gates", "Empire of The Sun", "Tora Tora Tora", and "From Here To Eternity".
Would "Raiders of The Lost Ark" count? Lots of things to consider when making these lists.
Thank you for recognizing "Das Boot"
"Band of Brothers" is cheating but despite it being a 10 hour plus miniseries, it's even on my list of Great Films, it's impossible to ignore or forget.

I can go back even earlier...

... for one of my favorites. Twelve O'Clock High (1949). Directed by Henry King, starring Gregory Peck.

I'd say Farewell to the King with Nick Nolte is a pretty underrated WWII era film.

And if you're looking for a WWII era series, give Rat Patrol a try, it's not as serious as band of brothers, but it's pretty fun.

U-571 was a great film. Flags of Our Fathers 7 Letter from Iwo Jima were great films too. the Big Red One and Schindler's List are also great films. The Pianist was an amazing film.

I love Das Boot!
You made a little mistake though: there are no allied submarines in the movie, but allied Destroyers and Convoys.

Have you seen Enemy at the Gates? Joseph Fiennes and Jude Law are not rival snipers (though they have their differences) they're on the same side (Russia) Joseph Fiennes isn't even a sniper
Also - what was with showing extremely spoilerish moments from lots of these movies? (Enemy at the Gates, The Great Escape)
Some you left out - Letters From Iwo Jima, Empire of the Sun, Come and See, A Bridge Too Far,
and I would have had The Thin Red Line much higher

Nothing beats Steve McQueen on top of motorcycle trying to jump over wires.
