Exclusive: New information on Star Wars: Rogue One characters & more!

01.26.2016

Now that the dust is beginning to settle on STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, all eyes are turning to Disney/Lucasfilm's next adventure to a galaxy far, far away...ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, the first in a series of spinoff anthology tales that will center on various characters at varying points in the Star Wars timline. Directed by Gareth Edwards, ROGUE ONE is said to be more like a war film involving the heist of the plans for the Death Star, taking place before the events of Episode IV.

So far, we've gotten a bare minimum of info on the film with some brief character descriptions, one official photo, and a series of blurry set photos, mostly of spacecraft sitting under a tarp. We've already heard rumors that Darth Vader will appear to some capacity in the film (which I'll address here as well) and have heard some potential story rumors. We've reported on some of this stuff last year, but now we have a bit of an update, some confirmations, and some new info to keep those STAR WARS fires burning. Nothing major here, per se, and nothing that would spoil the film, so you should feel comfortable reading the below. However, I'll just say LIGHT SPOILERS, just in case.

  • Rumors began swirling about stormtroopers in all-black costumes appearing in the film late last year and we can confirm that they will be in the movie. Our sources indicated that they are often referred to as "Death Troopers", although no mention if the commonly referenced "Shadowtrooper" from the Legacy Universe would be used. (also, recall that Donnie Yen shared an image of some helmets a while back, including a black one).

  • One of the prominent characters in the film is a droid that works with the rebels, specifically Felicity Jones' group, that is said to be a "scene stealer" in the film. It was originally an Empire droid and has been repurposed to serve the rebel alliance. He's two-legged and a dark grey or black color.  In terms of appearance, the droid has long arms and legs and is very different than a typical protocol droid like C-3PO. Could this be the mo-cap character that Alan Tudyk is playing? Time will tell.

  • So far we don't have a confirmation on any of the character names, but you can add this one to the puzzle: "Cashen" is the name of one of the key players, although which we can't say. It could be spelled differently as well, in that whole "Star Wars" way (i.e. Kashen or Kashyn, etc.). Speculate away on that one, but hey...it's a name.

  • There will be a new Tie Fighter design and AT-ATs will be featured in the film.

  • Lastly, addressing those Darth Vader rumors, we can confirm that Darth Vader will be in the film and is expected to have a larger role than originally thought. How big or how involved we can't say specifically, but expect to see the return of one of Star Wars' most infamous characters to the big screen.

And that's it for this little scoop. Again, nothing spoilery, just some interesting bits to get you hyped. I'm actually excited to see Vader back on the big screen and, really, why not bring him back? He's one of the most famous characters in cinematic history and with a new venue (the anthology series) in the mix, there's no reason they shouldn't feature him. I know some folks may feel that it would be better to feature new or lesser known characters, but it's not like they aren't addressing that as well with ROGUE ONE. So, it looks like we'll have some cake and eat it, too, with this one.

It seems fitting that they'd use the black stormtroopers and vary things up a bit, especially when going for a darker and grittier take on the STAR WARS universe. As for the new droid character; again, it makes sense. We got a new beloved droid in THE FORCE AWAKENS with BB-8, so it's fitting that ROGUE ONE would do something similar. Droids are a huge part of the universe as it is, so it would almost be neglectful to leave out that aspect or simply have them all as background characters. I look forward to meeting this new chap(pie?)

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, starring Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed and Forest Whitaker hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

After the narrative mess of TFA and its silly female empowerment politics, I won't be rushing to see Star Wars anymore. In fact, I'm not sure that I'll even bother with on Netflix.

Retroactive Star Wars

Retro fitting a Star Wars film set in the era of the OT is dangerous ground. Shadow Troopers, New Tie design, if these weren't seen or mentioned in the OT it has potential to make the OT lose any continuity to these new films.
Of all the squads we ever saw in the OT there were only ever 6 designs if my memory serves me. Clearly Shadow Troopers should be of importance and would have been seen on the Death Star for example. And what about the other helmet design?
Throwing too much new design

Throwing too much new design into this film will make it feel blatantly like a modern era creation and that misses the point of the whole OT era IMO.

I may be a rare one here but I would LOVE to see a Force Unleashed movie...but I think that is DOA at this point, especially with Starkiller Base in Force Awakens.
Curious to see how this one pans out though.

As much as I'm curious about this movie, let's just remember there's a reason why we didn't see this story told in A New Hope, it just wasn't important to the film. Why would it be now, if not just to milk a franchise that's already worth more than 5 billion dollars... To me Star Wars is the Skywalkers' story, period! The rest is fan fiction.

Yeah, it's not important...just like watching space men fight with laser swords. It's just interesting. And entertaining. And of course they're milking the franchise, it's a business and they have a cash cow.

Maybe the story wasn't told because they wanted the movie to be a certain length. The Star Wars Universe is a big place. Why waste the rest of it? It dose not matter what it means to you, since you aren't the creator, period! It was obvious from the success of the first three that this would be a franchise with plenty of stories to tell.

@The Darker- Well sorry to brake it to you but the creator is gone cause it didn't matter to him either. He told the story he wanted to tell, the rest is literally fan fiction whether you like it or not. In fact, he never cared about the EU and even regretted some of it. I mean, where does it end? Should we also tell the story of Bib Fortuna's grandfather or how the Wampas appeared on Hoth?

@Coremax- Nope!

Agreed. The original Star Wars belonged to the Skywalkers, anything else that happened before it doesn't matter. Having saying all that, I'll still go see the movie, but I just think this is one of those unnescessary spin-offs that doesn't do anything to this established franchise.

Personal opinion

I don't give a shit about any of these one off episodes, whether it's about the Death Star plans or a Han Solo film. I feel they dilute the trilogies even further and won't be wasting my time or money with them. I know, isn't everyone glad to know this? ;)

With respect, how do we know they dilute the trilogies and not enhance them, until we see what they come up with? Can't bring myself to turn my nose up so quickly personally. I agree that a Han Solo origin is overkill but standalone stories in this universe remain an intriguing idea for me. I'm all in.

So George Lucas's constant tinkering with the original trilogy didn't dilute them at all? Idk about the Han Solo film either, but rouge one sounds great, and I think it'll be pretty great too. I'll be seeing it, and I'm willing to bet you'll end up still seeing it too no matter how you may feel about them.

I agree. Even if they end up being good I'm just scared there'll be too much Star Wars. To me Star Wars is the story of the Skywalker family and its legacy, beyond that I just don't care as everything else just feels like fan fiction (that's why I never bothered with the EU. Even as a kid I couldn't care less).

I'm not really afraid they'll dilute the Original Trilogy story wise as much as what Star Wars is all about, its spirit and tone.

Then why are you leaving a comment under an article that is related to one of these "one off episodes"? You could have just passed it by and paid it no mind.

Glad to hear that Vader will play a big role in rogue one - it would be a waste to not have him in there. I'm very curious about the scene stealing Droid mentioned in the article. Hopefully he's somewhat similar to HK-47 from KOTOR 2
