Exclusive: Oscar “Best Picture” Retrospective – 1989

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

In this new series we take a look at the Oscar nominations of years past, examining the flicks that were nominated, as well as the pic we feel got snubbed among all the other candidates. Love 'em or hate 'em, the Oscars usually highlight the best films from each year (although there are plenty that get overlooked) and it's always fun to look back and see what was popular for any given year and to contemplate their legacy in retrospect. This time out we take a look at the 1989 Oscars, which had some strong subject matter material, including a Tom Cruise/Dustin Hoffman road trip flick that tackled mental illness, a Civil Rights drama starring Willem Dafoe and Gene Hackman, a romantic drama with William Hurt and Geena Davis, a racy historical drama with John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, and a Mike Nichols dramedy with Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, and Melanie Griffith.
