Sean Penn is trying his hand at the action genre this month with THE GUNMAN, which comes from director Pierre Morel, who kicked off Liam Neeson's action career with TAKEN. Not a bad way to start if that's your aim. The flick also stars Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, and Javier Bardem, making this a bit more high profile than you'd expect from a glitzy actioner. Today, we have an exclusive TV spot for the film, which shows that Penn may well have a shot at a new career path if it takes.

Check it out:

Here's the synopsis:

A former Special Forces soldier and military contractor suffering from PTSD tries to reconnect with his long time love, but first must go on the run from London to Barcelona and across Europe in order to clear his name.

I'm hot and cold with Penn, but will say that when he commits to a role he can generally nail it. If nothing else, he's an interesting guy to watch onscreen and has delivered some solid work behind the camera as well. Putting Bardem and Elba into the mix makes for a batch of cool actors just having some fun and I can respect that. It won't redefine cinema, but THE GUNMAN has potential to be a fun romp.

THE GUNMAN opens fire on March 20, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: What other older actors do you think could tackle an action role like this? I wouldn't mind seeing Jeff Bridges or Mel Gibson take a stab at the badass senior citizen genre.

Penn can take his elite badass to Venezuela

I hear they're in desperate need of toilet paper.

I wasn't surprised when Liam Neeson turned into an action star. He'd been turning in work for years in Darkman, Rob Roy, Kingdom of Heaven, and Batman Begins. Sean Penn hasn't done an actioner, but he's been plenty intense in most of his work. I don't see a great difference between this and something like State of Grace (granted, that movie didn't require him to have too many hand-to-hand scraps, and this one looks to promise that). The one real surprise in terms of late-coming action stars is

The one real surprise in terms of late-coming action stars is Colin Firth. Whether he decides to continue doing that or not, he owned. The person I think would be most inspired now would be Tom Hanks. Outside of Saving Private Ryan (and Cloud Atlas, from what I hear) he always seems like too nice a guy to be a badass. But it's Tom Hanks, so you know he could do it.

Tom Hanks would definitely be an interesting choice for this kind of role. It sounds almost laughable to think about it, given his affable persona, but with the amount of dedication he puts into a role (when he's really into it, anyway), I think it would be really cool to see. I'd be surprised if Firth continues the action route, BUT he has more than proven he can hack it. I'd be game to see him try his hand at it again.
