Exclusive (Spoilers): Cool info on Cap's costume evolution in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

06.11.2013

All right, let's kick this off. First things first: SPOILERS. Let me say it again: SPOILERS. In case the headline wasn't enough, I'm giving you one last chance to turn around. In fact, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is actually cool enough that you may not want to know it, even if you are the spoiler-friendly type. Last chance. I'll just throw up a "buffer picture" below and assume you're on board if you scoll below it.

So, yesterday, we caught a full-body glimpse of Captain America/Steve Roger's costume from CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Most felt it was a decent looking costume, but many, myself included, noted the apparent lack of the red, white, and blue. The costume is essentially the Steve Rogers: Super Soldier costume from the comics, only with a helmet, which he wore temporarily before getting back in the red, white, and blue. He currently rocks a more modern take on the classic costume (see comparison below).

As a fan of the comics and avid reader of them for the past twenty years, I've seen Steve Rogers jump around into a number of costumes (USAgent, Nomad, Super Soldier, etc.), but the traditional version, be it the classic, modern, or ultimate version, is where he belongs. However, a very reliable source has helped to assuage some of the pain of seeing the new movie Cap costume become something wholly different than his standard, explaining:

"This is Cap's S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform (obviously) but for circumstances unknown (either it getting destroyed or Cap hating it), at some point in the film, Steve breaks into the Smithsonian and steals back his 40's uniform. So for all of us that loved the Johnston suit, Captain America will be back in it by the end of the movie. Sort of takes the sting away from this lameness."

What I love about this news is two things. One, it brings back the costume that many fans loved the most. Second, I think the idea of having Cap break into the Smithsonian to steal his old costume back is pretty damn crafty and perfectly consistent with the ideals of Steve Rogers. If accurate, It also fits squarely within the realm of possibility that he's putting the old uniform on to confront The Winter Soldier/Bucky as a means to jarring his memory. It (the costume) wasn't an aspect of the original comic, but it's a great touch overall if it is in the film, which I'm willing to bet it is.

So, that's the gist, folks. Cap will be rocking some new duds and some old duds for his return to the solo film market. Based on the onslaught of set pics and video I've seen so far, the movie is looking like it will deliver a strong adaptation of Ed Brubaker's Winter Soldier storyline and provide a rousing, kick ass entry in the Marvel phase two line-up.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp, Toby Jones, Hayley Atwell, and Robert Redford hits on April 4, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: The National Museum of American History would be the most likely place that Cap would go to take back his outfit. At the actual exhibit is Dorothy's Ruby Slippers, Indiana Jones' fedora, jacket, and whip, Kermit the Frog puppet, amongst countless other items and exhibitions. Great place to visit if you've never been. http://americanhistory.si.edu/
