Exclusive: Spoilery details on Wonder Woman plot, characters, & more!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

With WONDER WOMAN slated to start shooting next month we still know very little about what it’s all about. However, we’ve got new information that will shed some light on the plot, villains, and even a special guest appearance in the film. Obviously, you can treat these as rumors until verified and there’s always the chance that some shifts could be made during filming, but for now our sources indicate that the below info is in the cards for WONDER WOMAN’s first solo outing.

SPOILERS for those that are trying to stay in the dark. I hate even having to type that as it should be obvious, but consider this your courtesy warning. Last chance to turn back.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR:

Not much. Gal Gadot is playing Wonder Woman, Chris Pine is playing Steve Trevor, Patty Jenkins is directing, and Jason Fuchs on scripting duties. It’s set to start shooting in the UK in November 2015. Other than that we’ve only had a handful of rumors. After today, you can add a shitload of rumors to the mix.

So, let's get into it…

THE SETTING:

Heroic Hollywood has reported on two key aspects that I’ll be building on and I can verify some of their reporting via our own sources. For one, the setting: Wonder Woman will take place in two key timeframes, World War 1 and Modern Day. According to our sources, the film follows very closely to the comic book, which is rooted very heavily in the mythological elements. It sounds very much like Wonder Woman is the Thor of the DCCU, so that should give you a basis of where she fits into the massive paradigm they’re building.

THE VILLAINS:

Also reported by Heroic Hollywood, both Circe and Ares will be the main villains, although Ares will act as more of a “puppet master” pulling the strings behind the scenes, while working in cahoots with Circe. Ares will be decked out in his classic mythological armor (typically portrayed as Greek hoplite or Roman gladiator armor), while Circe will have a cloth-based purple get up. Again, both will be close to the designs from the comic with the usual “movietization” upgrades. As far as the potential casting of Eva Green and Sean Bean, I can’t say, but if that happened I’d be fully on board. I’d be on board if Eva Green was in everything, actually, but I digress.

In addition, expect to see many mythological/mystical creatures scattered throughout (there is even mention of a visit to Olympus, but the context of that is unknown). Ares will employ an army of beasts that are described as red or green demonic monsters with horns and wings that will be sent to kill Wonder Woman at some point in the film to keep her from stopping Circe.

Lastly, although Circe is rooted in sorcery (and is known in mythology to have the power to turn men into beasts), she will also take on the form of a Chimera-like monster during her final battle with Wonder Woman.

THE PLOT:

The very basics of the plot follow Diana/Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor in modern day trying to stop Circe, who is manipulating high-level government men into starting World War III with the help of Ares. At some point she will explain to Trevor about her first battle with Ares during World War I, where she defeated him. Whether or not this is told in flashback or shown early on in the film is unclear, although it’s said that the majority of the film will be set in modern day, so don’t expect an even split between those timelines. You can get a really nice variation of this story in the exceptionally made 2009 animated film, which also draws from the original Wonder Woman canon.

THE INVISIBLE JET:

Yes, we’ll see it, but not consistently (and no, you won’t see it in BVS). It will first come into play when Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor leave Paradise Island for the first time. However much it could come into play later in the film is unclear, but it feels like this is more of a fighting film than a flying film, if you catch my drift.

BVS TIE-INS AND THE GODDAMNED BATMAN:

Okay, so this is where you should really pay attention. The WONDER WOMAN solo film will actually take place a few months BEFORE the events of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.

In addition to that, the Caped Crusader is said to appear in the film when Diana fights Ares' winged demonic minions, watching her save civilian lives during the battle. This could simply be a shot of Batman from a rooftop observing or something more, but his presence will be there. After the film’s finale, Batman will approach Wonder Woman in some regard to let her know he is aware of her, establishing a relationship that leads to her involvement in BVS.

As this is an origin film it makes perfect sense and helps establish a historical pinpoint for Wonder Woman in the new DCCU continuity without interfering in the natural progression of BVS to JUSTICE LEAGUE: PART ONE.  As for whether or not Ben Affleck will appear is still up in the air, but he seems like a team player already with his cameo in SUICIDE SQUAD and deep involvement in the future of Batman in the DCCU.

And that’s all we have folks! Again, you can treat this as rumor and there’s always a possibility that things will change or shift as production gets underway, but this is what we believe to be the working template based on our sources’ information, as well as corroboration from other independent sites. Either way, it’s much more than we’ve gotten so far, so feel free to discuss, dissect, and disseminate. With the film set to start shooting next month, I’m looking forward to some inevitable set pic leakage and goodies as we lead up to the Amazon Princess finally getting her much deserved solo outing when WONDER WOMAN hits theaters on June 23, 2017.
