Excuse me, who is a serious contender to play Nightwing in Batman vs. Superman?

Nov. 8, 2013by: Niki Stephens

The other day we posted that Warner Bros. was supposedly (this is the rumored buzz) looking for a "young John Hawkes type" to play Nightwing in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN.

Well, if this news is true then they may have found him...

The Wrap is reporting that GIRLS star Adam Driver is a serious contender and has emerged as the frontrunner for the role of Nightwing. SAY WHAT? Now I'm not as familiar with him so maybe this is why the choice is so unexpected but he doesn't exactly have an action track record either. This doesn't necessarily mean anything. The studio must see some serious potential in this guy. Not to mention that he's been in several acclaimed films like LINCOLN, FRANCES HA, and INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS. So the guys has some chops to speak of.

He's not the only one though. The site mentions that two other actors are also in the mix to play the character of Dick Grayson who has been estranged from his mentor, Batman for some time.

The site also seconds that Olga Kurylenko is the frontrunner for the leading female role which will serve as a love interest to Batman. The other two ladies in second and third are Gal Gadot (FAST & FURIOUS 6) and Elodie Yung (G.I. JOE: RETALIATION).

Thoughts on all this?

At this point, they might as well add a few more characters and change the name to The Justice League.

All of these rumors are becoming one big clusterfuck. I really hope they find someone better for Nightwing. Driver isn't a bad actor, but come on. There has to be better candidates out there to play the character. Hell, I would even take Gordon Levitt back for Nightwing at this point.

And I love how Batman got his own proper trilogy, but for some reason Superman is getting screwed over with trying to have his own trilogy. Too many characters being forced into this one.

I think Bats will be able to help him with that, I do want to see another Man of Steel and I'm sure we will get it, but for now I like where DC is heading, and like I said up the thread, really right now they are adding 3 characters plus probably a villian or two, big characters yes but the more I think about it its not the overload I had originally thought and has no where near the cast size of say DofP or even X-men Origins, and outside of Batman the others are still "rumors" I mean maybe

I don't mind having Batman in the film and possibly Wonder Woman, but I just hope that Superman's storyline doesn't get pushed to the side to make room for everyone else. I want to see more of Clark becoming Superman and the struggle and responsibility that comes with it.

And TheRealKalEl. You're right. I would love to see Green Lantern make another appearance either in his own sequel or a Flash film, but only if it progresses the story and has purpose and not just for bullshit purposes.

Yea I don't mind it at all, they are setting up something bigger and in a different way from marvel, and whos to say we wont see a Man of Steel 2 some time down the road? Marvel has connected their movies with easter eggs, name drops and ofcourse their after credits (using shield too i guess) but I think DC is taking the cross overs to the next level, we will probably never see Thor and Cap team up in a movie, or Iron Man and Hulk or anything like that (Black Widow doesn't count because shes

So it seems like the best that we are going to get from WB/DC this decade is Arrow. Oh well, seems like WB/DC works in cycles. Donner kicked ass in the 70's, then throughout most of the 80's Superman got fucked up. Then Tim Burton came along and kicked ass in the late 80's & early 90's, then Schumacher fucked it up. Then Nolan saved things in the 00s and kicked ass, then Goyer/Snyder fucks it all up again. Wonder who is going to come along and clean up the current mess we are in?

Adam Driver is an outstanding actor. I'm assuming none of the users commenting here have watched Girls. He is the only reason I sat through the second season. Really happy they're considering him and not someone who is well known/well liked just to try and get more people in the theater. Talent first.

All castings aside

I don't like what this interpretation of Bats is going. Our first introduction to this Batman in this universe (which is probably here to stay, as bad as it ends up being) and practically everything has already happened? I understand they feel like people don't want to see the origin all over again, but I don't like this been there, done that, old, tired, weary, retired(?) Batman who has done everything already. DC is so fucking stupid.

I'm probably going to get flack for this, but I guess I could see it. I do like the idea of a world where Batman is the veteran who disapproves of a young, impulsive and all too powerful Superman, and who already has a bit of a Bat-family around him.

If this were Batman versus Superman the XXX Parody then they wouldn't have to limit themselves to one love interest.

Hmmmm

Before I get to Nightwing and why that is DC's BEST IDEA YET, on the Wonder Woman casting, I think Yung has the best look, I look at her and see Wonder Woman, I dunno why but if those are the three we get to choose from, I'm jumping on her band wagon (who knows tho, as Affleck wasn't on the list of actors rumored for Batman, nor was he really mentioned till the bomb shell was dropped on us.) I really hope if they do include Wonder Woman tho, it's really only an extended cameo, setting up her

I really hope if they do include Wonder Woman tho, it's really only an extended cameo, setting up her own movie and pushing towards Justice League, throwing too many new characters into the movie wont fare well. Now, I love that it's an older Batman, I love that Nightwing will appear, I don't really know the actor well but with his track record of movies he should be able to bring some depth to the character, but what I love the most is the story lines they can use. Death in the Family would be the perfect Batman story to use for this universe, and having Dick already as Nightwing they can easily bring in Jason Todd and set up the story for the second or third Batman movie they do in this line. Personally I've wanted to see that more than any other Batman story done on the big screen, and having Dick already Nightwing is the perfect set up for it. I loved Man of Steel, and think it was a great starting ground for DC, Batman vs Superman (please god don't let that be the title tho) will really be the film that makes or breaks them going forward

And I know it's starting to feel like a lot of characters, but the more I think about that its really Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Nightwing and ofcourse the eventual villian....this isn't DofP with 30 mutants or whatever they are at now...maybe we are all getting to worked up over nothing, since other than Affleck as Batman nothing else is official yet

You can cast all the Nightwings, Wonder Womans, Canaries, Riddlers, whoevers and whatevers you want, it doesn't change the fact that the epicenter of all this, the primary character, will be played by Ben Affleck. Yes I'm still bitter and no I don't think Affleck has it in him to play a grizzled Batman. Watch The Dark Knight Returns and tell me I'm wrong.

@tyleroch: Doesn't matter if they're going for 35, 45, or 55. Ben Affleck is a great director, and a solid actor if he's within his comfort zone, sorta like George Clooney. And there's nothing wrong with that, as long as they are given appropriate roles. A cop in Boston? Affleck can nail that with perfection. An emotionally dark, complex, experienced crimefighter born from tragedy, who disguises himself as a billionaire playboy by day, who also happens to be somewhat cynical and grizzled?

Affleck's going to f*cking fumble and trip all over the place because again, the man just doesn't have it in him. 20 years of his career and not a single shade of Batman is in there.

I don't think they are going for a 55 year old Batman in this movie. I am pretty sure they are just going for an older Batman who has been around and more experienced. Like how the Arkham games automatically set you in a world with an older more experienced batman, I am sure Batman in Arkham City and Arkham Asylum isn't 55 years old and Dark Knight Returns Batman but still an older experienced Batman, I think that is what they are going for more then Dark Knight Returns...and I believe Ben

That would confuse people... non fanboys would assume JGL's character is an extension of the Nolan trilogy, and the studio has made it crystal clear it doesn't want to associate Batman with that trilogy in this film.

Sigh, so this movie is only for fanboys who already know the history with these characters, and the rest of the audience be damned.

I was really hoping to see DC films build up their cinematic universe. Marvel did it so well, and most of their films aren't even that great. What Marvel did right was slowly introduce us to every character, and establish every character. Marvel built their cinematic universe from the ground up. DC isn't building anything up, they are just jumping in head first

A. Doing the Nightwing story without first introducing Robin just seems wrong
B. I'm not a fan of the whole approach to Batman so far. I understand you don't want to repeat what Nolan did, but if you gloss over the character's history then it will just seem like a weak intro to this new version. Spend too much time on the character and this will become a Batman movie with a superman cameo. The way things are playing out, it seems like the latter already.

But hats exactly what people are saying they don't want to see, retread of the Batman origin story. They've already said they want to make Batman older and more seasoned, my guess is they are going for a Batman that is already established. I don't think they really need to do a retread of the Robin history either, they just need to establish that Dick was once Robin and is now Nightwing. My theory is that they want to open the door to do Red Hood and Damian story lines in the Batman solo

Did I hear the dreaded words "Love Interest" sigh, so they are doing a huge tent pole movie with two major characters that could hold their own franchises and still have more material left to cover and they are going to throw in a love story. Gah this is going to be soo bad.

My knowledge of Nightwing is nil. My anticipation for Batman vs. Superman is still low. But Adam Driver is a fantastic actor. While he hasn't made a name for himself as an action guy, he is a former Marine, so he's got that going for him. At the very least, if he's cast it might raise my interest in the project.

Don't know him enough to judge.

My first impression of this guy was channel surfing - I stopped and watched a few minutes of an awkward sex scene in GIRLS (I think). I wasn't impressed (no pun). But I don't know him.

Anticipation meter:

Avengers: Age of Ultron: 10
X-Men Days of Future Past: 9
Superman vs. Batman: 3

I want to get excited for your movies, DC, I really do... but you're just not making this one easy for me.

Well in The Dark Knight Returns comic, there is a new young girl Robin, so I'm betting they would rather have Nightwing follow Affleck Batman around. I'm not sure about this guy too much, but maybe there is something there that we don't see.

His guy could kill it. Have his beard and cut his hair and he'll look the part. The guy is pretty jacked already so he definitely has the physique. And from why I've seen of him on Girls, he can manage the serious content with the humorous content as well.

This guy will certainly be a far better Nightwing than Affleck will be as Batman.

Seeing as the conclusion to Nolan's Bat trilogy was far from perfect, I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing a new take on a big screen Batman. Despite the whiney backlash by people who've seen nothing from this movie yet, it seems like they're doing things differently and maybe being quite smart about things. We're getting an established Batman character, not another origin, so they're finally accepting that the audience aren't idiots who don't know who Batman is every time the actor changes

They're also putting Batman and Superman together which is a fairly sensible way to work towards a Justice League movie (if that idea pans out). As for the various possible castings, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I mean it would be cool if someone with martial arts skills played Nightwing, but it's hardly essential. People should really give this movie a chance, at least until they've actually seen something (anything) from it.

" it seems like they're doing things differently and maybe being quite smart about things."

Differently, yes. Smart no.

Doing something differently is not inherently smart or dumb, it's different and while I agree that giving us an established Batman is a good call, that really seems to be as far as their good ideas go. A near universal complaint about Iron Man 2 was that it was stuffed with unnecessary characters and was a a cheap setup to the Avengers rather than a quality standalone

A near universal complaint about Iron Man 2 was that it was stuffed with unnecessary characters and was a a cheap setup to the Avengers rather than a quality standalone movie and it seems like DC has either learned nothing from Marvel's mistake, or they just don't care and figure that it will still make money anyway. Also, even if they did have a lot of good ideas going for them the words "David Goyer is the sole screenwriter" significantly curbs my enthusiasm.

Eh.

I am not one to usually be against casting, but this dude is a weird looking dude, and I know it is all about the acting, but Idk, I can't get past the way he looks. On another note, I feel like I am the only person who is extremely excited about this movie. At first I was neutral on Ben as Bat, but the more I thought about it, I kept feeling better about it. Man of Steel was awesome, and I am not a Superman fan at all, I hate Superman personally. I am a huge Batman fan. I think everyone is a

I think everyone is a bit to harsh on this project and need to see stuff from it before judging it. I am definitely looking forward to seeing a Batman in a movie who does some serious ass kicking, don't get me wrong, I love Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, but something that these movies have in my opinion never captured is a Batman who kicks serious major ass, and I think Snyder can pull it off.

Adam Driver Is A Great Actor

He's fantastic on the HBO series, Girls. His character is very dark, weird and complex. Adam is also in great physical shape. I hope he actually is cast as Nightwing.

No...No Thank You....

Please no. He may be a good actor, I've never heard of him, but this guy looks absolutely nothing like Nightwing/Dick Grayson and in no way does the character justice. No amount of CGI is going to change that. You cannot convince me that this skinny, awkward, weird looking guy, is one of the most bad @$$ mortals in DC. Sure he can put on a few pounds of muscle but that only does so much. Plus its kind of hard to hide a secret identity if your face is covered in moles, that mask barely hides the

I don't know how I feel about this movie

I'm already not a fan of Goyer writing this and I'm still slightly skeptical about the inclusion of Wonder Woman, but Nightwing too? I think they should focus on the relationship dynamics between Batman and Superman, not try making this as much of an Avengers ripoff as possible.
