Fast 2 dumps Diesel

Universal has decided to no longer pursue Vin Diesel as the returning star of FAST AND THE FURIOUS 2, instead focusing the sequel on Paul Walker's character.  As a result of that decision, director Rob Cohen, has also left the project.  Cohen had a clause that he would only return to F&TF2 if Diesel was involved.  While officially the studio is denying they broke off talks because of salary issues, it's widely believed the $20 million paycheck Diesel and his agents were looking for was too hefty for Universal.  The studio had been preparing for a Diesel-less sequel from the beginning, optioning two scripts - one with his character and the other without.

F&TF2 will now follow Walker's cop Brian O'Connor, who's been stripped of his badge following the events in the original film.  He's given a chance to redeem himself by his superiors and that opportunity involves another undercover adventure in the street racing world; this time in Miami.  While Universal and Diesel reached an impass over this film, they are still gung-ho on the PITCH BLACK sequel THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, for which the star received a $12 million payday.  Both F&TF2 and RIDDICK are both scheduled to begin filming later this year.
