Fast and Furious 7 will hit theaters 13 months after Fast and Furious 6

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Well, that was a bit unexpected. Despite rumors that FAST AND FURIOUS 6 would be filmed back to back with a seventh movie, Vin Diesel just announced at CinemaCon that FAST AND FURIOUS 7 is officially happening and will hit theaters on July 11, 2014, which is just over a year after the release of FAST AND FURIOUS 6, which hits May 24, 2013. The news is somewhat surprising seeing that director Justin Lin has been in back and forth negotiations to come back for the seventh chapter. Word is now that Universal is looking at James Wan, director of INSIDIOUS and THE CONJURING, to take over directing duties on the film.

Universal is either confident or overconfident with this news. Sure, FAST FIVE was a big success but FAST AND FURIOUS 6 is still in post-production. I am sure it is going to be a success at the box office, but it could also crash and burn. This is the sixth chapter in the franchise, a feat rarely matched for anything outside of horror franchises. But, those franchises all had diminishing returns as the film number increased.

Diesel confirmed that the main cast including himself, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, and Tyrese would all be coming back for the seventh film, which may tell you who will or will not survive the upcoming sixth movie. I think this is a bold move that makes fiscal sense, but to me undermines FAST AND FURIOUS 6. This would probably have been better news if the rumored surprise ending were left as the only word on another sequel. Now, that mystery has been dispelled.

Anyone excited that part seven is now a lock?
