Final trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness features space battles, Klingons, and lots of jumping

Apr. 16, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The final trailer for J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS has arrived and features a good amount of new footage tied in with what we've already seen before. There seemed to be a lack of "space action" in the earlier trailers, but this new one promises that we will have some laser-on-laser fights after all, one of which looks to be with an Enterprise-like ship on steroids. We also have a gllimpse of the Klingons, which are rumored to have a lot of involvement in the plot and quite a bit of jumping, almost to superhero level theatrics. It's a mostly Kirk-centric trailer, focusing on Captain Kirk's (Chris Pine) resolve. We really don't even need this trailer, as cool as it is. I mean, is there anyone not going to see this?

Believe in Kirk:

Here's the synopsis:

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch opens in 3D and IMAX on May 17, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: I'd personally love to see the Klingons as the main villain of the next entry in the series. What's your preference?

Of all Star Trek series, I really like Star Trek: The Next Generation and their movies. It'd be great to see the new Star Trek crew teams up with Sir Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Piccard and his Enterprise crews.

Looks like a wild ride. As I've stated before, I wish they didn't need to destroy the Enterprise every other movie, but this still looks pretty damned good.

Okay, after that trailer I'm definitely leaning towards 'Evil Picard' as Cumberbatch's character.

Klingons

With having roles in six of the eleven TREK movies (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), the Klingons have had enough outings. Time for the Gorn to return (They're the villains in the upcoming video game).

It's looking better and better. While some of the story elements may seem a little familiar, I think there will be enough in terms of the performances, visuals and effects to make this unique enough.

Mirror universe

After seeing the shot that looks like two Enterprises could the villain be from the Mirror universe. I like the theory about an evil Picard. I'm 100% sold on the movie

Stab, that's fine if you think TOS is outdated, I get that current mainstream audiences probably couldn't sit through an episode. However, please do not say that this stays true to it. Abrams Trek and TOS are two completely different things.

Not such a bad thing. Roddenberry, like George Lucas, was becoming the biggest problem with his own creation. STAR TREK: TNG became a lot stronger once Roddenberry was out of the picture, and the same thing happened with the movies.

Rolling with pride maybe. Abrams has taken an outdated series and has made it appealing to the current generation of moviegoers while at the same time staying true to the original formula and keeping most of the old fans happy as well.

@oh-dae-su

It's amazing that everyone says that yet most need to be reminded that when it came to the movies, they all had a lot more action and revenge-based plots than the television shows which were able to be more exploration-based given that they have an entire season to work with, not two and a half hours.

The Next Generation films did, not the original series films. The first six films were all character driven and used action to progress the story, not just to look cool. Every single hit in Wrath of Khan had a great effect on the situation. The Enterprise is hit ONCE and their engineering is badly damaged and their communication is almost destroyed. It progressed the film and had consequences. This is looks more like Nemesis where ships would just randomly fire at eachother and everything would

This is looks more like Nemesis where ships would just randomly fire at eachother and everything would be alright, creating an illusion that there was any actual danger but in actuality the visual effects department just wanted to see what they could do. I am open to the idea of more action based Star Trek but we have had 5 examples now that show it clearly does not work and should not dumb itself down for a more mainstream audience.

Cool

I can understand some people not liking these new Trek films because they stray a bit from the originals in some aspects. They need to understand though that for many of us Star Trek has always sucked, and now it finally seems interesting.

At this point, I don't care if John Harrison is someone from the original series--I would actually prefer if he were entirely a new character. This final trailer is so epic!

In regards to the tidbit, I would like the Klingons or the Borg to be the villains, but I'm leaning more towards the Borg because it seems like the Klingons are getting easily disposed of by John.

JUMPING!

Over the past, I don't know, 5 or 6 years there seems to have been a rise in action films having the characters blind-jumping from a ridiculous height in the hopes (or somehow knowing) they'll land safely. I first really noticed this in Fast Five. A recent example is Good Day to Die Hard. But I'm sure there are more.

In Star Trek Into Darkness, Harrison's character clearly has some type of superhuman abilities unlike Fast and Furious and Die Hard where you have real characters doing unrealistic things.

Red head Scotty...?

In that trailer, Scotty has red hair, when it was black in the first movie like the original Scotty. Simon Pegg doesn't like dying his hair?

Could be good

OK, I think this looks like a great movie...but so did the first reboot. Which had a ton of eye candy, but a script that was borderline retarded. I have high hopes for this one, but I'm skeptical. Lets pray this villain has actual motivation and William Shatner doesn't show up on a random planet from an alternate universe.

It looks like Kirk learns some humility in this next entry.

Right now, this film is my most anticipated of this year....
