Firestarter collector’s Blu-ray hits March 14th packed w/ new bonus features

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Personally, the only thing I really find interesting about 1984's FIRESTARTER (other than Heather Locklear. I like that part. That part sticks out) is the fact that, back in 1982, Universal originally hired John f*cking Carpenter to direct the flick! That would have been awesome, I'm sure.

John Carpenter even went so far as to have his buddy Bill Lancaster write the script. Lancaster of course also wrote the ultra-classic THE THING for Carpenter, so this sounds like a match (no pun intended) made in heaven for FIRESTARTER.

Then THE THING bombed, Universal got cold-feet, abandoned Lancaster's script, and booted Carpenter out of the director's chair in favor of the guy that directed TRUCK STOP WOMEN.

The rest is history.

NOTE: To be fair FIRESTARTER director Mark L. Lester had just directed the minor classic CLASS OF 1984 and would go on to direct COMMANDO, but I'm just telling you that for the sake of thoroughness.

Here is the FIRESTARTER synopsis:

She has the power to set objects afire with just one glance!

Firestarter, based on the unforgettable best-seller by esteemed horror author Stephen King, chronicles the extraordinary life of Charlene "Charlie" McGee. Eight-year-old Drew Barrymore stars as the child who has the amazing ability to start fires with just a glance. Can her psychic power and the love of her father save her from the threatening government agency, "The Shop," which wants to control her… or destroy her? Filled with blazing special effects and featuring an all-star cast including Martin Sheen, Heather Locklear, Art Carney, Louise Fletcher and George C. Scott, Firestarter is directed by Mark L. Lester (Class of 1999, Commando) and driven by a pulsating, thrilling score from Tangerine Dream (Legend, Sorcerer, Risky Business).
