First Burke & Hare poster catches Pegg and Serkis off guard

05.14.2010

We now have our first look at Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis and Isla Fisher in BURKE & HARE via this Cannes promo poster spotted at the festival (courtesy of Slashfilm). We all know Pegg’s comedic sensibilities, and Fisher fits into a corset quite nicely I must say. I’m very curious to see how Andy Serkis handles a live action comedy like this, as for the most part we’re used to him traipsing around in mo-cap suits as Gollum or King Kong.

Burke and Hare is the story of two famous English murders, but if you want a more robust description, check out the full synopsis after the poster.

WILLIAM BURKE and WILLIAM HARE are scratching out a living in 1830s Edinburgh. After yet another failed business venture, they return to Hare’s lodging house to find that their tenant has suddenly died on rent day.

As the boys decide how to dispose of the body over a drink, they discover that a corpse can fetch a hefty price. Edinburgh is the centre of the medical universe and the city’s doctors are crying out for more cadavers for their educational lectures. First they try the infamous DR. MONRO, but he’s not interested, so they sell the corpse to DR. KNOX, his vain and ambitious rival who urges them to bring any more ‘unfortunates’ they may stumble upon.

Entrepreneurial Hare is quick to realize they’ve hit on a great money making venture and despite the more sensitive Burke’s misgivings, they embark on a series of plans to secure more bodies. They arrange a series of deadly ‘accidents’ for the local unfortunates and to celebrate their success, they go out on the town to celebrate. There, Burke meets GINNY, a beautiful and spirited aspiring actress. In a series of hilarious comic misadventures Burke and Hare begin to secure a steady stream of bodies and the cash starts rolling in.

Extra Tidbit: Dr. Who's David Tennant was originally slated for the Serkis part.

I really hope...

this is a return to form for John Landis, who's made some truly excellent movies in the past and needs to give us more.

This might be great and all. But admit it. The poster looks like shit!

Sounds awesome. And I like Serkis. Most don't know him from his live action roles, but he's a good actor with a bit of a comedic spine. This one should be fun.

Yea but let's be fair, he hasn't really made a decent film since around 1988.

I'm not saying it WILL be bad, just saying his recent track record isn't great. I'm definitely watching this for the cast over anything.

Dead excited

Though as mentioned below I would've loved to have seen Tennant opposite Pegg, just to see Tennant on the big screen more than anything.

Serkis is more than capable though, he was pretty good in "The Cottage" so I have high enough hopes.

Also looking forward to seeing Jessica Hynes back alongside Pegg. However I am quite worried that this is post 80's Landis we're dealing with here. I can't shake that horrible feeling.

Couldn't agree more. Serkis is very able indeed in a 'live' role. He was good in 'The Cottage'. :)

Super excited for this. Looking forward to seeing Serkis in a comedic role. As for that official synopsis, the movie studio needs to hire new writers: "to celebrate their success, they go out on the town to celebrate." WTF? That's like saying they kill people by killing people. Just sayin'.

This movie looks great and I love the poster, synopsis, and the cast, especially Pegg. Dude makes everything better and funnier that he is in. It would have been awesome to see his partner in crime, Nick Frost in this as well, even though they're both going to be in the upcoming movie Paul with each other.
