First clip and Nightline piece from Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty

UPDATE: Looks like Yahoo! pulled the clip. I’ll update as soon as they put it back.

ZERO DARK THIRTY is gearing up for its release and today we have our first look at a clip from the film, featuring an intense exchange between Jessica Chastain and Kyle Chandler.  Early reviews have pegged Chastain as the true star of the film, bringing a ferocious intensity to her role as a CIA operative on the hunt for Bin Laden.  Additionally, ABC’s Nightline ran a piece on the making of the film, featuring interviews with director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal and filled with a lot of behind-the-scenes footage and clips.  Compelling stuff.

Here’s the clip:

Here’s the Nightline piece:

I’m really looking forward to ZERO DARK THIRTY.  I’ve been a fan of Bigelow’s work since NEAR DARK and even though I had a lot of issues with THE HURT LOCKER, due largely to its vastly inferior portrayal of EOD Soldiers and general military tactics, but that doesn’t affect the style and deft touch of her work.  I get the feeling that a lot of people will shy away from this film, perhaps because they may feel it’s too current and that’s a shame.  Witnessing the journey to killing one of the most murderous, evil bastards on the planet would seem like a slam dunk.

The earlier released SEAL TEAM SIX: THE RAID ON OSAMA BIN LADEN felt every bit a TV movie, but wasn’t the worst I’ve ever seen.  I’m sure it will sink to the bottom of the barrell when contrasted with Bigelow’s film of the same events.  Personally, I think it’s an important film and I’m glad to see they’ve approached a “warts and all” approach to making it.  Hopefully, it’s more accurate than THE HURT LOCKER.

ZERO DARK THIRTY, starring Jessica Chastain, Kyle Chandler, Mark Strong, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Chris Pratt, James Gandolfini, Frank Grillo, Harold Perrineau, Scott Adkins, and Mark Duplass hits theaters on January 11, 2013.
