First Darkness poster

Oct. 15, 2009by: Mike Sampson

So what did you think of the trailer for EDGE OF DARKNESS that debuted on the web yesterday? Honestly, the appearance of Mel Gibson was the only thing that was keeping me interested and that's with an entirely suspect Boston accent. The parent-getting-revenge genre is pretty hot right now (LAW ABIDING CITIZEN opens today) and this looks to be at least another solid entry. The poster popped up online to compliment the trailer and features 50% more glowering than the trailer. Check it out below:

Extra Tidbit: The January 29th release date scares me.

Crazy Mel is back...

Seems like it could be a good film, I dig when Gibson goes violent. Don't worry about the release date. The studio probably just thought it be good time to release it seeing as how TAKEN took about $140 million during its run and was released on the exact same weekend earlier this year. Plus it has 3 weeks of no real competition before SHUTTER ISLAND...

COOL

The trailer was awesome. Mel looks awesome in the character and this poster is awesome as well. I am sure the movie is going to be AWESOME.

The poster kind a reminds of PAYBACK.

Speaking of Payback - that movie is classic.

Positive

This is looking pretty good to me. I think Mel pulls off the accent a lot better than other actors in these Boston-themed movies as of late. Originally being from New England, I have some experience with this. So yeah, this looks pretty bad ass. I'll see it.

I'm not worried

It's Martin Campbell for Christ's sake. He put new life into Zorro, he put new life into James Bond (twice), I'm pretty sure he can do it for the revenge film too.

Like I said. Looks like your average Mel Gibson Revenge movie. We already saw it a hundred times...

Trailer was good but...

Not that much of an attractive poster to me. And the tagline is not hooking enough for a movie featuring Gibson's return. Like they said before, it looks too similar to Payback's poster.

Payback 2: Electic Boogaloo

Is it just me or does this poster look like the poster for Payback? Only without the blue hue...

January 29th?!

Only three words come to mind when I think of that release date: what...the...fuck.

Mel Gibson's first film as an actor since "Signs" is coming out in January? Even though De Niro dropped out, I was still interested in this film. Now that I know its release date is January 29th, my level of interest has nearly hit rock bottom.

I should be looking forward to films like "Edge of Darkness" and "The Book of Eli", but I can't muster up too much excitement due to their January release dates.

The only good films to see in wretched months like January and February are the Oscar contenders from the previous year that are expanding into more theaters. That's it.

Damn...

To be fair, Taken had an almost identical release date and it was huge. Maybe the studio is banking on its similarities leading to huge success in the same frame this year. I know my mom is actually planning on seeing it after seeing the trailer 100% because she loved Taken.

Also, it is real easy to judge these situations, when studios have men whose jobs it is to pick the right date (though obviously they fuck up quite often). I agree that Gibson deserves more than a Jan release (I would have

I agree that Gibson deserves more than a Jan release (I would have preferred the Lethal Weapon Christmas time date for this flick), but compared to us, the studios know what they are doing. Just food for thought.
