First Fright Night trailer features a fanged Farrell in action

May. 13, 2011by: Paul Tassi

The very first spot for the FRIGHT NIGHT remake is here, and it would seem to be a pretty drastic recreation of the original.

It features Colin Farrell as the evil vampire next door, and the whole thing has a distinct DISTURBIA vibe as Anton Yelchin sets out to prove he's a killer by invading his house and such to find evidence.

I think it's a cool villain role for Farrell, who isn't getting enough work these days, but to be honest, at this point I'm so exhausted from vampire pop culture, I don't even care if this looks better than most entries, I'm predisposed to dislike it. I'll wait for the film to prove me wrong, but seriously, we need to start moving on from this seemingly endless trend.

Trailer and full synopsis below:

"Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—and everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself."

Extra Tidbit: What vampire powers will he actually have outside of biting?

Love the original and I'm intrigued to see this. But it looks like one of those movies where the really good parts will stand out but the really stupid parts will make it hard to ultimately like the movie. Like that last part with the motorcycle or whatever the hell it was. That just looks stupid as shit. We'll seeeeeee.

On up side: Anton Yelchin will most definitely be an improvement over William Ragsdale, who I'm sorry, just didn't have the greatest delivery, and that always bothered me.

On the down side: I'm not convinced a Criss Angel-type would be an obvious vampire hunter. But at the same time this generation by and large wouldn't know about Peter Cushing or Vincent Price.

The best thing about the original in my opinion was Chris Sarandon's Jerry, and the way they touched all the bases of the vampire lore from bats to wolves to crucifixes. Colin Farrell looks to be working a similarly individual vampire. And the Vegas backdrop could be interesting.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.

Could be something here,,,

I'm a huge fan of the original and I think they nailed it with Farrell. I think this is looking good so far, I'm hoping the next trailer has Peter... he's an important character.

Terrible

Terrbile terrible terrible.

And to echo another user - where was Peter Vincent in all this? Or maybe David Tenant realised how bad a decision this was and eradicated all evidence of his character from the movie?

One to avoid.

Surprised

I love the original and this trailer definitely has me somewhat excited for the movie. Still don't think it will top the original, but it looks like it will be a fun film.

so you take out all of the funny moments, the subtle nuances and the sensuality of the original and VOILA you got this mess. With the exception of Colin Farrell, there is nothing about this movie I like. Another classic gets ass raped.

HORRID

Once again Hollywood takes a classic, campy, fun, understated film like the original "Fright Night" and removes all of the charm and character by turning into a typical stalker, slasher, action flick retread.

The beauty about the original "Fright Night" originated from the fact that Charlie Brewster was a regular kid in his house and just happened to get an eyeful of something that he wasn't supposed to see. He sees the fangs, he draws the conclusion and the vampire games begin.

So let me ask you. In this trailer McLovin Evil Ed deduces that all of the kids disappearing happen around Charlie's house. Don't you think the cops would deduce that first? That is a pretty easy conclusion to draw. That would be one of the first things the cops notice.

So instead of just killing women, normally prostitutes, and disposing of the bodies quickly...which is a very smart way to reduce suspicion...this vampire retread holds them hostage in rooms in his house...which looks MUCH bigger on the inside than the outside.

The charm of the original...it could happen in ANY neighborhood. Charlie could be you or me. And much like Rob Zombie ruined Halloween with to much exposition this 'Fright Night' is ruined with just TOO MUCH.

Terrible. Just watch the original, take it at face value and have a good time. Don't waste $11.00 dollars.

Eh....

I'll end up seeing this, cause I'm a fan of the original, but as far as the trailer goes, I wasn't completely impressed, but it'sonly the first trailer. Then again, if it's one thing I've learned, trailers don't make the movie. I've seen plenty of great trailers that ended up being horrible movies, and horrible trailers that ended up being great movies.

I'm willing to accept that the original wasn't all that great. In fact I'd say it was a rather average B flick.

So why have any ties with the original at all?

Why not just produce an original vampire movie?

Is it the name sake they need?

But why would they need the name sake if the original sucked?

I also want to ask

Is the original really that much of a classic? Really? I mean there wasn't a whole lot in that movie I watched and thought "there's no way they could do that better!". Just a discussion question.

My thoughts on this is Peter Vincent didn't need to be turned into Criss Angel. I loved that he was a Hammer films style vampire hunter. Made more sense for Charlie to seek him out.

It looked surprisingly good. I really like the cast especially Yelchin, Farrel, and Collette. But Im holding out mainly because I fear it'll end up being PG13 and Im so fucking tired of PG13 horror. Especially vampire movies, vampires should be ripping peoples throats out and shit like that.
Hopefully they won't make Ed a gay little bitch like he was in the original

After the initial bad reviews I was worried but I thoroughly liked the trailer and I will be seeing this in theaters.

Pass.
It seems like the things that made the original work so well they got rid off and tried to make it "hip" for the kids that hate everything before 2000. I'll wait for Netflix. BTW, why does everyone KNOW he is a vampire?? The whole point of Fright Night was that only Charlie knew it and everyone else thought he was nuts. Kind of ruins the whole thing for me.

Perhaps Tennant is being kept a secret

Maybe he's going to be awesome, they just want to surprise us with the awesomeness. This looks like an above average thriller and better than I thought it would look.

Farrell looks like he's having a great time.

I'm taking the obligatory nay-sayer role here, and I have no problem with that.

The original worked because it wasn't afraid of being a little campy and corny and to not take itself it too seriously. Judging by the trailer, the remake clearly missed that mark.

The only thing that works with this new one is that it seems to fit in with the majority of every other remake that's been rehashed in the past few years. And that's not a good thing.

Look, the original was NOT good.

Ed was annoying as shit (probably still will be), the like five minute scene of Jerry dancing with Amy in the nightclub was BAD, I love 80s music more than a normal person should and that was some BAD music and made the scene boring and goofy. Other than Amanda Bearse in a pretty much see-through outfit (back when she was kinda hot and nobody was for the wiser) it was lame and dated. Nobody nowadays gets the Peter Vincent character since that stuff was dying almost 30 years ago (yes I realize

It was a product of its time and is completely valid for an update, and frankly Colin Farrell is cool as shit, I'll watch anything with him in it once.

Where's Doctor Who?

Seriously where's David Tennant? I thought his appearance as Peter Vincent was gonna be a big part of the movie, is it just a cameo?

The original was awesome, but the trailer failed to get me hyped up about it. Also David Tennant was hardly shown in this trailer.
