First full trailer for the James Franco-helmed adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Child of God

Jan. 21, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

I am very interested in checking out James Franco's CHILD OF GOD. The teaser gave us a glimpse at the Cormac McCarthy adaptation, and now a full trailer has been released. The way the trailer was cut makes the film seem like it's a horror movie, which isn't that big of stretch considering the gruesome and twisted actions committed by Scott Haze's Lester Ballard in the McCarthy novel. Speaking of Haze, this could be a breakout role for the actor, who is more known for his work in theater. Although it looks like the budget wasn't very big for CHILD OF GOD, the trailer is pretty damn creepy, and I'm really digging what I've seen so far for James Franco's film.

Bang...

Synopsis:

A dispossessed, violent man who's life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Successively deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation.

James Franco also has a small part in CHILD OF GOD, and it also stars Jim Parrack (BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, the upcoming FURY with Brad Pitt) and the always fantastic Tim Blake Nelson. CHILD OF GOD still doesn't have a distributor, so there isn't a release date at this time.

Two observations

1) The trailer wasn't really creepy; it was too long, tried to hard to build up tension, and telegraphed a large number of plot developments. Doesn't mean the movie is bad, but I hope that the editing is tighter than the trailer.
2) Tim Blake Nelson is the type of character actor that will put my butt in a movie theater seat, even if the whole movie isn't great, so I'm there.

I wonder if we will see him pop up again in the Marvel Universe as the Leader.

I'm enjoying all of these quality actors like Affleck, Levitt, Franco, Gosling, and Bell directing and/or writing their own films. It's exciting to see what else these people bring behind the camera as well.

dang man...

Looks like a novice shot that movie....1st it has that cheap feeling to it because it should have a subtle filter on a movie like this... Especially when your shooting full digital and no film...a movie like this needs a certain amount of graininess in exactly 24 fps and only film can give you that look...unless you have someone in the editing booth that can recreate that eerie or creepy timeless look you want with period pieces but more specifically period pieces w/ psychotic overtones.....and

Next you have problem with your camera shots and how it tends to stay for a second or two too long on certain angles and it makes it look cheap cuz if you had more shots in a scene you wouldn't need to linger on some shots..b-movie cheap... then all those shots your lingering on, everyone's looks way too clean cut. Everyone looks like they just stepped out of the beauty salon...not even one 5 o'clock shadow on anyone's grill....film could have helped that but again NO FILM... Not sure yet but acting might be subpar but it doesn't help when everything else looks cheap. Sry but if this is your first film directing I would have chosen film, would have helped cover up 'Hollywood magic'
